When will it come? Will it come within this month? Will it come within these days? Then the breath ceases, the warmth gradually disappears, and the radiance fades. The chin droops, and the hair stands on end. Relatives and siblings, friends, and so on, say, "So-and-so has died." Then, they roll the corpse into a bundle. They place a curtain of cloth, and so on, over it. Then, they perform the seven-day ceremony, reciting scriptures. They place a portion of fine wine near the scent or the corpse. Then, they carry the corpse to the mountain, where vultures and so on eat it, pulling it this way and that, dragging it back and forth. Crows and so on carry pieces of flesh and bone in their mouths, cawing as they fly away. Will fragments of hair and bone be scattered here and there? Will they cremate it and collect a handful of ashes? Will they bury it in the earth, making it a den for worms? Will they throw it into the water, making it food for fish and otters? When will such a thing befall my body? At that time, my clothes and so on will be worn by others. Others will dwell in the house and so on, enjoying it. When will such a thing happen? Enough, will that time come? Will it come this month? Enough, will it come now? Will it come tonight? Thinking thus, I meditate with longing. And to that, tears involuntarily flow.
