The Tenth Volume of Instructions Treasury, Preliminary Notes. The Tenth Volume of Instructions Treasury. Preliminary Notes. Here begin the Preliminary Notes. I prostrate to the feet of the glorious and venerable Lama. The preliminaries are of two types: common and uncommon. The common preliminaries are four: the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, impermanence of death, karma and its results, and contemplating the faults of samsara. First, the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment is explained in four ways: from the perspective of the cause, from the perspective of the essence, from the perspective of the number, and from the perspective of the example. The difficulty of obtaining it from the perspective of the cause is that the cause is guarding moral conduct, and the result is obtaining a human body. Moral conduct is the mind that abandons the ten non-virtuous actions along with their retinue. It is said that the mind of abandonment is superior to attainment; it is taught as the perfection of moral conduct. Since those who abandon are very few, the result, a human body, is difficult to obtain. As Jetsun said: "Although a leisured and endowed human body is not rare, few are those who guard moral conduct." The difficulty of obtaining it from the perspective of the essence is that it is difficult to obtain the complete eight leisures because it is very easy to be born in the eight states of un-leisure. The eight un-leisures are: "Hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, barbarians, long-lived gods, and those with wrong views, those in worlds devoid of Buddhas, and the mute—these are the eight un-leisures." The three, hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals, are tormented by suffering. Barbarians, from the perspective of philosophical systems, refer to the Tigris people and others. From the perspective of places, they refer to those in remote areas who, although appearing in human form, do not know what to do and what not to do, like animals. Gods are heedless. Those with wrong views have minds that have become perverted. Worlds devoid of Buddhas are like dark aeons, and those born in intermediate continents lack the appearance of a teacher. The mute lack complete mental faculties and do not know good from bad, so they are said to be without leisure to hear the holy Dharma. It is also difficult to obtain endowment: being born as a human in the center of the country, having complete faculties, having faith in the Dharma, not having reversed karmic actions, and going towards liberation. These five are one's own endowments. The center of the country, from the perspective of place, refers to places like Bodh Gaya in India. From the perspective of Dharma, it refers to a place where the teacher's doctrine is completely pure.

Where is it? Being born as a human in this life and the next, having all six senses complete, having faith in the Dharma, not having committed any of the five heinous crimes that lead to bad consequences, the Buddha appearing and teaching the Dharma, the teachings abiding and being followed, thinking of others and having compassion, these five are the favorable conditions for others. The Buddha descended into the world, taught the Dharma, the teachings abide, entered the teachings, and possessed the favorable conditions for practicing the Dharma. Having such qualities, the human body, along with six qualities such as being difficult to obtain, is in accordance with the Dharma, therefore it is called precious. Furthermore, there is no sentient being that has not been one's own mother, and the number of times each sentient being has been a mother is as Nagarjuna said: "If the bones of mothers were the size of mustard seeds, even if they were made into balls, they would fill the earth." Although countless such bodies have been obtained, obtaining a leisure and endowed human body is only this once. If the ultimate benefit is not achieved this time, then no matter how many more bodies are obtained, a leisure and endowed body will be extremely difficult to obtain in those bodies. The Bodhicharyavatara says: "This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to obtain, and having obtained it, one can accomplish the purpose. If I do not make use of it, what greater self-deception is there?" It also says: "Relying on the boat of the human body, one can cross the great ocean of suffering. This boat is difficult to find later, so foolish ones, do not sleep at this time." From the perspective of numbers, it is difficult to obtain because there are extremely many beings born in the three lower realms, and very few born in the higher realms. Among the beings in the higher realms, obtaining a leisure and endowed human body is extremely rare. As Jetsun said: "The leisure and endowed human body is said to be rare, seeing your kind is even rarer." For example, there are countless worms in the space of a palm, and each ant nest has countless ants, let alone a human body? Therefore, know this. Furthermore, the sutra says: "All the land, mountains, and rivers are filled with animals, the amount of other beings in the lower realms, no one can know its number." From the perspective of analogy, it is difficult to obtain like: "A yoke floating in the vast ocean, a blind turtle's neck entering the hole, a human body is extremely difficult to obtain."
