Quintessential Instructions Treasury, Volume Six. The Great Glorious Naropa's Instructions on the Five Nails for Dispelling Obstacles. Quintessential Instructions Treasury, Volume Six. The Great Glorious Naropa's Instructions on the Five Nails for Dispelling Obstacles. The Great Glorious Naropa's Instructions on the Five Nails for Dispelling Obstacles: Homage! I prostrate to all the Lamas! This instruction for dispelling obstacles on the path has two meanings: showing the characteristics of experience, and the method for correcting faults. Firstly, for example, a farmer who cultivates the spring field will have an abundant autumn harvest. If there is no autumn harvest, then the cultivation is meaningless. Similarly, it is impossible for a yogi who abandons worldly affairs and meditates properly on the path not to have a meditative experience. If there is no experience, then the meditation is meaningless. Therefore, the arising of the stages of experience is the fruit of the effort of meditation; it is said, "By seeking, one finds; by doing, one achieves; by accomplishing, one succeeds." There are two ways in which this experience arises: gently and forcefully. Or there are three: experience with qualities, experience without faults or qualities, and experience with faults. The first has three: the experience of means is when one feels the body is spacious and comfortable, warmth arises in the body, and all external and internal things appear as comfortable. The second, the experience of wisdom, is when the wisdom of individually realizing the nature of all phenomena arises, the signs of the object of samadhi subside, one abides clearly and immovably without realization, one does not feel the movement of the winds, and one does not feel the existence of the body. The third, the experience of the inseparability of means and wisdom, is when these experiences appear in union, and when happiness arises, one experiences the indivisibility of bliss and emptiness without thought, and when various happinesses appear as one taste in emptiness, one experiences the indivisibility of appearance and emptiness, and thus, for all sentient beings who have not realized this, great compassion arises spontaneously without effort, and one experiences the indivisibility of emptiness and compassion, and so on. These three experiences are those with qualities, and one should improve them further and further through the effort of meditating on the path. The experience that is neither beneficial nor harmful is like

Just as all things grow on the summer grasslands, so too do all kinds of experiences arise for the yogi. During the times of equipoise and post-meditation, there is no certainty whether such experiences will arise or not. To give a brief illustration, these appearances may be like a fire blazing, like being submerged in water, like sinking into the earth, or being destroyed by the wind, or daylight turning to darkness, or the night being extremely bright, or seeing many realms of the world, or a tigress sharpening its teeth, or being surrounded by a host of demons proclaiming terrifying sounds, or being surrounded by a host of deities preaching the Dharma and giving prophecies, or oneself manifesting in various forms, or having incomplete limbs, or dwelling in the middle of the sky, and so on. Even the sound of a dry human head neighing like a horse is not impossible; such experiences can also occur for a yogi. However, these experiences have no benefit or harm, so there is no need to regard them as superior or inferior, nor is there any need to correct them. They are merely a sign of the degree of stability within the mind. There are five ways in which coarse experiences arise as Dharma: if the elements are unbalanced, then the suffering of illness arises, the suffering of death and transmigration, intense afflictions, various perceptions of distracted samadhi, and various outer and inner activities. To correct these faults, there are five nails that remove obstacles on the path. The first is to show the nail that enhances illness, the meaning of which is: if the suffering of illness is not removed, it will hinder meditation and destroy the path of samadhi. Therefore, with the instructions taught from above and below, the suffering of illness is pacified, and that experience is made to increase further and further on top of samadhi. It removes the fear of the path and enhances illness, hence it is called the five nails. This has three aspects: showing the cause, characteristics, and methods of correction for the pain. The first of these, the cause of the arising of pain, is the channels, winds, and bindus. Each of these also has three aspects: the male channel is young, the female channel is not young, and the neutral channel is balanced. The male wind is strong, rough, and difficult to control; when the wind is seized, the body throbs and shakes. The female wind is slow, gentle, and easy to control; when the wind is seized, the body becomes numb and trembles. The neutral wind is transformed by the circumstances of the container. The male pleasure is not very obvious.
