One should seize (the mind), one should guard the seized (mind), and one should abandon the two extremes. These will seize the mind. If it is not seized, then place the mind on the treetop made during the blessing time, or on grasping the sun and moon, etc. If that still doesn't seize it, then shift the mind to the space in front, the tip of the nose, between the eyebrows, the navel, etc., and seize the mind with the previous three key points. This will definitely seize the mind. The second general topic, the first of taming the mind, is not to let it run to where it has gone: wherever the mind goes, tie it with the rope of mindfulness, and do not let the mind that is not seized by mindfulness run away alone. If mindfulness does not seize it, it will fall to the end of the cycle of discursive thoughts. If mindfulness does not seize it, it means it has run elsewhere, so generate the antidote and do not let it run away. The second is not to let it be slow in the place where it has stayed: if the mind wanders and goes into calm abiding, it will become a Hearer, so the mind is not tamed. Take it out from wherever the mind has emerged, such as the image of the Thus-Gone One mentioned earlier, or a pillar, or a vase, etc., and place it elsewhere. Likewise, do not let the mind be slow even for a moment, but shift the object of focus, and do not let the mind be controlled by calm abiding, but tame the mind. Do not let it be scattered up and down, that is, do not let the mind be controlled by both scattering and calm abiding. In short, if you want to stay, you also have the autonomy to stay; if you want to scatter, you also have the autonomy to scatter. Both staying and scattering are seized by the rope of mindfulness, and it comes as you want it to be, which means the mind is tamed. The third general topic, the first of placing the mind on that suchness, is learning from three examples. The time of delusion, the time of recognizing delusion, the time when delusion is completely integrated into the groundless state. The first is learning from the twelve examples of illusion: the first is seeing all the places flooded by the water of mirages, thinking that these are oceans of water, this is the time of delusion. Then, as you get a little closer, you see that it is not water, but a mirage, thinking that this is not water, but a mirage, this is the time of recognizing delusion. Then, as you get closer, the mirage also disappears, and the delusion is completely integrated into the groundless state.

Fighting with enemies in a dream, and having many relatives and friends, is the time of delusion. Sometimes the appearance of the dream does not cease, and understanding in the dream is the time of understanding as delusion. As soon as one wakes up, all appearances disappear, and that is the time of thoroughly understanding that delusion has no basis. Likewise, it should also be applied to illusion, water moon, city of gandharvas, rainbow, cloud, lightning, makeup, and mirage, etc. One should generate a special conviction in the examples of illusion. Then, it should be applied to the meaning, and there are two aspects to that: applying it to recollection and training in the object of focus. First, whichever affliction is strong, such as when anger arises, if a strong thought of killing or binding others arises, that is the time of delusion. Then, after a while, the affliction subsides, and that is the time of understanding it as delusion. Then, realizing that it is not true, that is the time of thoroughly understanding that delusion has no basis. Therefore, anger is one's own mind. Since that mind arises from causes and conditions, it is illusion. If illusion is analyzed, it cannot be found, it is without self-nature. That is the Great Seal without Letters (Tibetan: ཕྱག་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ་ཡི་གེ་མེད་པ་). What is called "letter" is conceptual thought, because it can be expressed. That which is without conceptual thought and cannot be expressed, being free from expression, is called the Great Seal without Letters. Likewise, one should apply this to each affliction and practice meditation. Second, training in the object of focus is to abandon the body and mind that bind, abandon the possessions that are clung to, and train in other categories. First, in the sky in front, invite the lama and the yidam deity, regard them as enemies and friends, and even cut one's own body into pieces and offer it. Those are also mind, mind is illusion, illusion is without self-nature, apply the mind to the Great Seal without Letters. Likewise, one should also abandon all possessions and apply the mind to the without Letters. Third, training in other categories is to go to the hell realm below and experience the suffering of boiling and roasting. Then, be liberated from it. That is mind, mind is illusion, illusion is without self-nature, and one should also apply the mind to the without Letters. Also, the one hundred thousand Buddhas below and the Buddha Vairochana above.
