Thus, five stages of experiential arising occur. The first stage is like a waterfall cascading down a steep mountain, where one thought follows another in an unbroken stream. Some practitioners with small minds may think they cannot generate meditation and become discouraged. This is called the experience of recognizing thoughts. Previously, thoughts were not recognized, but through practice, the thief of thoughts is now recognized, which is a precursor to the arising of meditation. Therefore, generate joy. By continuously practicing this, the second stage is like a stream in a narrow gorge, where sometimes thoughts subside, and sometimes thoughts suddenly arise, alternating. This is called the experience of thoughts resting. Again, by continuously practicing this, the third stage is like a pond at a three-way junction, where if not disturbed by adverse conditions, one feels that the mind is abiding in peace, but when even a slight condition arises, the mind cannot remain still. This is called the experience of thoughts being interrupted. Again, by continuously practicing this, the fourth stage is like an ocean with waves, where no matter what waves of thoughts arise, by applying a little antidote, mindfulness and awareness, the thoughts naturally disappear. This is called the experience of thoughts being fabricated. Again, by continuously practicing this, the fifth stage is like an ocean without waves, where no matter what external conditions arise, there is no need to exert effort in applying antidotes, mindfulness and awareness, and samadhi naturally arises. This is called the experience of thoughts not manifestly fabricating. Like this, the latter two experiences are, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Thereafter, the diligent one with vows, obtains manifest fabrication in the mind, arising naturally, through that meditation, not fabricating." This is when explaining the nine methods of abiding the mind and the eleven mental engagements, it is merely reaching the experiential meaning of mental engagement with effort and mental engagement without effort. By continuing this state, as stated in the sutra: "Thereafter, that one's body and mind, having obtained great pliancy, is called one with mental engagement." Like this, the bliss of physical and mental pliancy, the body being as light as cotton, and the bliss of the mind being able to abide in samadhi at will, is merely the proximity to the first dhyana.

Through continuous practice, by abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned through meditation in the desire realm, most afflictions will subside. One attains the first dhyana accompanied by joy and happiness, the supreme samadhi of the actual basis. Supernormal knowledge and miraculous powers arise from that. One is fortunate enough to hear various instructions in the Buddha-fields of the ten directions. As Maitreya said, "From that, it will increase, the increase will continue for a long time, and the abiding of the actual basis will surely be attained. If one strives for supernormal knowledge, through practice, it will become workable. Supernormal knowledge is obtained from dhyana. Through the door of manifest accomplishment, for the sake of offering and listening to immeasurable Buddhas, one will go to all realms." From this, it is known. Therefore, no matter how much false shamatha arises, such as false quiescence, unclear quiescence of the mind-stream, quiescence where object appearances cease, and quiescence where thoughts and feelings cease, some still remain in the desire realm, and some do not exceed the proximity attainment. Therefore, no matter how much others praise the vague experiences and various visions arising from these states, if one is free from arrogance and pride in supernormal accomplishments, then one is adorned with the clear eye of Dharma. Second, the method of meditating on the nine mental abidings is: "Placement, continuous placement, and replacement, close placement, taming, and pacifying, close pacifying, single-pointedness, and equanimity." Like this, focusing the mind on the object and holding it, and continuously holding it, and if the mind wanders, gathering it back and holding it, etc., these nine states should be done as before. Second, there are two ways to meditate on vipashyana: meditating according to the oral instructions of the Nagarjuna tradition, and meditating according to the oral instructions of the Maitreya tradition. The first is: This tradition is: "First, avert non-merit, in the middle, avert self-grasping, and finally, avert the basis of all views, whoever knows these is wise." Like this, there are three stages, the first is: The intention of the first turning of the wheel of Dharma is renunciation, the root of the Mahayana path is love and compassion, and training the mind in relative bodhicitta, as Nagarjuna said, "Temporarily avert the source of all faults, non-inherent existence."
