Quintessence of Nectar, a Guide to the Madhyamaka View in Accordance with the Treatises of the Two Great Chariots, Volume Four of the Damngak Dzö. Damngak Dzö, Volume Four. Quintessence of Nectar, a Guide to the Madhyamaka View in Accordance with the Treatises of the Two Great Chariots. Herein dwells the treatise entitled Quintessence of Nectar, a Guide to the Madhyamaka View in Accordance with the Treatises of the Two Great Chariots. Om Swasti. Homage to the supreme spiritual friend who teaches the Madhyamaka path, the union of emptiness, which is the nature of reality, free from elaboration, and self-existing luminosity. I will unfold the quintessence of nectar, the profound guide to the view. This has three parts: (1) the preliminary practice of cultivating shamatha as a basis for vipashyana; (2) the main practice of cultivating the Madhyamaka view of vipashyana that comes from the two traditions; and (3) the conclusion of practicing the union of shamatha and vipashyana after stability has been attained. The first of these is explained in terms of abandoning the five faults and relying on the eight antidotes, and in terms of cultivating the nine ways of abiding of the mind. According to the first: It is essential to recognize the five faults in cultivating samadhi. Once these are recognized, it is crucial to rely on the eight antidotes that counteract them. The five faults are as follows, according to Maitreya: Laziness and the instructions, Forgetting, sinking, and excitement, Not applying and applying: These are considered the five faults. Thus, laziness, which is not enjoying the cultivation of shamatha; enjoying it, but forgetting the key points of the instructions and not being clear; not forgetting them, but falling into either sinking or excitement during cultivation; when falling into sinking or excitement, not applying the antidote to abandon it; when sinking and excitement have subsided, not focusing on the essential point of the root object, but being too focused on the antidote that pacifies it—it is crucial to recognize these five. The eight antidotes that abandon them are as follows, according to Maitreya: The place and abiding therein, The cause and the result as well, Not forgetting the instructions, Examining sinking and excitement, Manifestly applying their antidote, And introducing sleep when pacified. Thus, the place of effort, aspiration; the effort of abiding in aspiration; the cause of aspiration, faith; and the result of effort, pliancy—these four are the antidotes to laziness.

The antidote to dullness is the mindfulness of not forgetting, and the constant maintenance of awareness that observes whether the faults of dullness and excitement have arisen is precisely vigilance. Recognizing dullness and excitement, the antidote to abandoning them is attention, and the antidote to turning to joy in dullness and aversion in excitement is manifest engagement. When dullness and excitement subside, the antidote to overly manifest engagement is equanimity of action, and after that subsides, the mind rests naturally on the fundamental object of focus. Having understood this, among the two types of objects of meditation, those with and without support, the first practitioner should focus on an object that is easy to visualize, such as imagining a blue lotus with a million petals, about the length of an arrow shaft, in front of oneself. First, clearly establish the refuge and take refuge, make supplications, generate the mind of enlightenment, and contemplate from various perspectives of renunciation and the mind of enlightenment, according to the common mind training. The actual practice is to generate unwavering faith in the lama and the Dharma, and led by faith, strongly arouse the desire for the Dharma. Relying on this, initiate joyful and enthusiastic diligence in wanting to practice the Dharma. The result of this is the pliancy of body and mind, so these four must definitely arise, therefore strive for them, as these four are the antidote to laziness, so they must definitely arise in the mindstream. Then, fix the mind on that object, gather the activities of the three doors into one, first tighten. If it is tightened too much, faults such as tightness in the head may occur, so loosen it slightly in the middle, and maintain mindfulness by not forgetting the object of the instruction, and vigilance by observing the faults of dullness and excitement, so that mindfulness does not diminish. If the faults of dullness and excitement occur, the antidote to remembering the excellent qualities of the holy in dullness and joy, and contemplating the faults of samsara in excitement, is manifest engagement, which is attention. When dullness and excitement subside, maintain the ordinary state, and in the relaxed and loose state of mind on the fundamental object itself, rest clearly and distinctly, which is called equanimity of action. If you understand such key points, eliminating the five faults and simultaneously possessing the eight applications of abandonment will occur, which is the oral instruction of the excellent lama. Meditate in this way.
