Now (na nyid), the place of teaching, the characteristics of the disciple, the manner of how to rely on, and the basis of favorable conditions. First, in the Great Perfection of Ati (ཨ་ཏི་བཀོད་པ་ཆེན་པོ་), it is said: "Wise and free from worldly affairs, reaching the ultimate meaning of Dharma nature, without confusion about the meaning of desire, these are the characteristics of a secret mantra guru." Therefore, in general, one who is proficient in the meaning of all the secret mantra tantras, able to distinguish the differences between philosophical schools, especially with warmth and experience in this particular path, skilled in explaining the meaning of pith instructions, and spontaneously free from the distractions of attachment, hatred, etc., in this life. Through the completion of the practice of the two stages, the Vajra body is able to strike the vital points, thereby enabling the mandala of wisdom to reach the ultimate manifestation of Dharma nature. With realization, one liberates one's own mindstream, and with compassion, one ripens the mindstreams of others. With profound wisdom, one cuts through the additions and subtractions of the meaning of reality, and one is not confused by the answers to questions asked by disciples. One who possesses these characteristics is called a great Vajra Holder Guru. Conversely, one should not rely on those with faults. The Self-Arisen Tantra says: "Ignorant and arrogant, foolishly following words, not contemplating the meaning of secret mantras, cutting off the thoughts of others, arrogant words, entering the wrong path, not seeing the face of the initiation mandala, vows have been broken, not answering questions, little learning and great arrogance, not examining the teacher is the demon of the disciple." Therefore, one should not rely on those with these faults from the beginning. Second, the characteristics of the disciple. The Self-Arisen Tantra says: "Possessing the power of faith and great diligence, great wisdom and no attachment, possessing respect and practicing secrecy, without distraction in the non-conceptual mind, possessing vows and diligently practicing, acting as the teacher says." Therefore, one who is filled with joy and strives for the guru and the oral instructions is the faith of joy. One who is filled with longing for the fruit to be attained is the faith of desire. Not doubting is the faith of conviction. Not being taken away by temporary causes is the ultimate faith, which is the complete cause for blessings to enter. One who has a firm vow of courage without retreating or slackening in accomplishing the unsurpassed enlightenment. Thinking about the profound meaning of reality

With clear wisdom, it is easy to generate realization. There is little attachment to worldly pleasures and wealth such as food and clothing. Having great respect for the Lama and Yidam, the door for blessings to enter is complete. Having cut off doubts about the path of Secret Mantra, one is able to engage in profound practices. Not allowing the mind to dwell on ordinary thoughts such as attachment, hatred, and ignorance, one is free from distraction. Having taken the vows of the root and branches, one's commitment is firm, not transgressing them. There is no weariness in meditating on the profound path. Not deviating from what the Lama has said. A student with these qualities should be considered worthy of receiving teachings. Conversely, the faults of a vessel are, according to Rangshar: Not showing respect or reverence, engaging in immoral conduct of Secret Mantra, without lineage and without patience, becoming of little wisdom, despising kindness, becoming meaningless and immoral. A student who has not been examined is an enemy to the teacher. As it is said, if the profound Dharma is taught to someone who is not a suitable vessel, the Dakinis and Damchen will inflict punishment, one will not attain accomplishment, and slander will arise, therefore it should be avoided. Third, the manner of relying on the teacher is: A student with qualities should rely on the teacher as a sick person relies on a doctor, in order to be liberated from the sickness of samsara, serving and revering with body, speech, and mind, with respect and without deceit. Like someone wanting to cross a river relies on a boatman, fearing samsara, one should always listen to the teachings. Like a merchant relies on a leader, desiring liberation, one should make great offerings. In particular, the best is to grasp the teachings of the lineage of accomplishment through service. The intermediate is to purify the obscurations of the three doors through service of body and speech. The lowest is to fill the measure of the two accumulations with offerings of material goods, and in any case, one should please the teacher. According to Rangshar: Thus, for the oral instruction teacher, one should serve with one's own body, precious jewels, and very rare things. As it is said, and its benefits are, according to the Tantra of the Source of Ambrosia: Even offering to the Buddhas filling the sky, adorned with various jewels, filling the three thousand worlds, cannot compare to applying a drop of butter to a single hair of the Lama, a hundred thousand merits cannot match it. And, in other respects, it purifies the obscurations of the three doors
