By remembering all the various thoughts of oneself in the mind of the lama. Rejoicing in remembering the nature of the happiness and suffering of each of the six realms, the nature of samsara and nirvana, dharma and non-dharma, as much as is remembered. The mind is thrown into the middle of the sky, thrown into the depths of the ocean, thrown into the middle of the mountains and rocks, unobstructed. Experiencing joy and displeasure, happiness and suffering, birth, death, hunger, thirst, and so on. Going to places that have been visited before and places that have not been visited before. Being thrown into the respective places of the six realms. Imagining the sky and the earth filled with hells, hungry ghosts, animals, humans, gods, asuras, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, stupas, temples, gardens, and pure lands. Thinking of oneself as being filled with enemies, evil spirits, and obstacles. Playing in attachment and aversion, diligently practicing without leaving any traces. Afterwards, focusing the mind on the words and meanings of the Dharma, abiding in view, meditation, conduct, and result. The signs are: the mind becoming clear and light, the cessation of delusion and thoughts, the arising of joy, and the arising of the samadhi of bliss-clarity-non-thought. The realization of primordial liberation, like the sky, arises from within. If these signs do not appear, repeat the practice. The necessity is: pacifying the obstacles of the mind, purifying sins, liberating in the Dharmakaya, and attaining Buddhahood in the essence of the Vajra Mind. Thus, while performing these three preliminaries, the lama meditates on the meaning of the direct experience of reality in his own place. The students go to the foot of a mountain where it is easy to gather, and are asked individually whether the signs of distinguishing samsara and nirvana have appeared. If they have not appeared, they are made to practice again. During the day, the actions of body, speech, and mind are integrated and practiced. At night, the body and mind are relaxed, and diligent practice is undertaken. If signs appear within three days, it is the highest faculty. If they appear within five days, it is the middle faculty. If it takes more than seven days, it is the lowest faculty. At these times, if the sky is clear and accompanied by rainbows and light, it indicates that one has mastered it and that sins and obscurations have been exhausted. Otherwise, it indicates that sins and obscurations are great, and one should strive to repeat the practice. In this way, there is a need to distinguish between samsara and nirvana, so that one does not regress. These are the steps for preparing the students. The second part, the actual empowerment, has three parts: the preliminary preparation, the main empowerment, and the post-

The Excellent Praise. First, the Lama in that place, makes a round mandala of scented water, adorned with four circles of luminous spheres with a center and periphery. Arrange five sets of five flower bouquets, and around them arrange outer and inner offerings. If possible, also arrange five sets of five mandalas of incense, spices, medicine, jewels, and fruits. Second, then, when the sun rises on the top of the mountain, the disciples come holding flowers, and after being bathed with good scented water, they take off their upper garments and sit with their palms joined at their hearts before the Lama. The Lama asks the disciple three times, "Child, who are you?" The disciple answers, "I am the only son of a fortunate mind." Repeat this three times. The Lama says, "Since this is so, enter this good and delightful mandala of the Great Perfection of Naturalness! Why is this so? Because samsara has no essence, is neither permanent nor endurable, and is full of suffering. The supreme method of liberation from it is none other than the Great Perfection of Naturalness, which attains Buddhahood in one lifetime. Therefore, generate great faith, and for the benefit of all sentient beings, first pray to the Lama, and repeat after me:" Having said this, recite: Great Vajradhara Lama, please listen! All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and all the families of Vajra, Ratna, Padma, Karma, and Tathagata, please listen to me! I, named..., from this time until I reach the state of enlightenment, Great Vajradhara Lama, please bless my body! Please bless my speech! Please bless my mind! Please bless my appearances! Please cause me to ripen! Please cause me to be liberated! Please cause me to be fulfilled! Please cause me to increase! Please cause me to greatly increase! After making this general prayer three times, then specifically pray to the lineage Lama: Alas! You who possess the body, speech, and mind of all Buddhas, who emanated from the realm of self-exhausted defilements, who gaze from the realm of self-purified stainlessness, who accomplish the benefit of beings with great compassion, the Sugata who possesses the mind that knows the world, whose single intention is unwavering and undifferentiated.
