Tenth: Differentiating the Nature of the Ultimate Fruition Tenth: Differentiating the Nature of the Ultimate Fruition 1. The Occasion of Ascertaining the Fruition of the Vehicle of Characteristics Thus, relying on the complete perfection of realization, progressing from higher to higher in the five paths and ten grounds, the nirvana of each of the three vehicles, and especially the manifestation of great enlightenment that does not abide in either extreme, the tenth ground is divided into four occasions for differentiating the order of the ultimate fruition: Ascertaining the Fruition of the Vehicle of Characteristics, Ascertaining the Common Accomplishments of Mantra, Ascertaining the Ultimate Fruition of the Vajra Vehicle, and Specifically Ascertaining the Fruition of the Early Translation Secret Mantra Tradition. The first (occasion) has two parts: Generally explaining the nirvana that is the fruition of the three vehicles, and specifically explaining the Buddha that is the fruition of the Great Vehicle. The first (occasion) is: The fruition to be attained by the three vehicles is nirvana, the nature of nirvana is the suchness of all phenomena, cessation nirvana is nominally established in the stage of faith, the ultimate is attained from the paths of seeing and meditation, the incomplete is the completion of the no-more-learning, non-abiding nirvana does not fall to the extremes of samsara and peace. The fruition to be attained by all three vehicles is nirvana, and that itself is generally explained as three: nature nirvana, cessation nirvana, and non-abiding nirvana. The first is, as stated in the Root Verses: What is spoken is false, Because the sphere of the mind is extinguished. Unborn and unceasing, The nature of phenomena is the same as nirvana. As it is said, the suchness of all phenomena is naturally pure. Second, cessation nirvana has two aspects. The nominal is: As stated in the Compendium of Topics: What is nominal? It is the cessation by which the seeds are weakened by the worldly path. Therefore, the Bhagavan spoke of its synonym as nirvana by its limb. Thus, those who attain cessation nominally in the stage of faith. The ultimate cessation is the cessation attained on the grounds of the paths of seeing and meditation, as it is said in the same text: What is ultimate? It is the cessation by which the seeds are completely destroyed by the wisdom of the noble ones. This also has two aspects: incomplete and complete. The former is, as stated in the same text: Incomplete

How is it? Whether it is included in the fruit of Stream-enterer or included in the fruit of Once-returner, it is the cessation of the learners. As it is said, it is all the cessation of the learners. Complete perfection is, as it is said in that very text: How is complete perfection? It is the cessation of the non-learners included in the fruit of Arhat. As it is said, it is all the cessation of the non-learners. In this, too, there are two kinds, with remainder and without remainder, according to the order of each vehicle. The third is the Non-abiding Nirvana, which is the Nirvana of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who, by the power of wisdom and compassion, do not fall into the extremes of Samsara and Peace. The second of the root has three parts: the meaning of the Buddha's nature and name, and how the activities of the body are accomplished. The first is: possessing the three great qualities. This means that the ultimate fruit, the nature of the perfectly enlightened Buddha, is characterized by the three great qualities: the body that is completely purified of the two obscurations and their habitual tendencies is the great abandonment; the wisdom that clearly sees the entire sphere of knowable objects is the great realization; and by that power, constantly, universally, and spontaneously accomplishing the benefit of all beings is the great mind. In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: All beings are supreme, that is the mind, Among abandonment, realization, and the three, The nature of the three great qualities, Know that this is the essence. The second is: Buddha, like a lotus. This means, why is it called Buddha? Because one awakens from ignorance, which is like sleep, and expands the mind on the two knowable objects, therefore it is called Buddha. As it is said: Because one awakens from the sleep of ignorance, And also because one expands the mind on the knowable, Buddha, like a lotus, becomes enlightened. The third part has three: showing the relationship of what cause accomplishes what result, explaining the difference of where and how it is accomplished, and extensively explaining the result of what is accomplished. The first is: By accumulating the accumulation of merit with the mind of Bodhicitta, The ripening result accomplishes the Form Body, And the accumulation of wisdom accomplishes the Cessation Body. With the intention of having the mind of Bodhicitta, by the practice of perfecting the six perfections, the two accumulations are greatly completed, and thus the two bodies are obtained.
