Fifth Chapter: Explanation on Determining the Vessel of the Individual in Whom the Teachings are Established. Fifth Chapter: Explanation on Determining the Vessel of the Individual in Whom the Teachings are Established. Now, from the instructions on the position of the individual who holds it, there are five: to whom to instruct, by whom to instruct, what to instruct, how to instruct, and praising the benefits of the instruction. First, in the display of the vessel to be instructed, there are two: what should be abandoned and what should be adopted. Generally, the vessel to be abandoned is: Thus, this essence of the profound vehicle, other than an individual with excellent intelligence, fortune, and certainty, should not be taught to those of lesser vehicles, those biased towards cause and effect, and those of small intelligence and little fortune. Those with little fortune will not understand even if profound teachings are taught, those with small intelligence will abandon the Dharma because their minds cannot contain it, those of lesser vehicles will be attached to their own tenets and have wrong views, and those attached to the Dharma of cause and effect will always measure everything by karma and cause and effect. Therefore, even if teachings like the sky are taught, they will argue and see it as a place of slander. Therefore, because they are not vessels, this unsurpassed Dharma must be kept secret. As the Kunje Gyalpo Tantra says: "O great Bodhisattva, if this meaning is taught to those of the cause and effect vehicle, they will say that it is not reasonable for a result to arise from a cause, just like the Dharma of cause and effect in the world." And: "Do not teach my Kunje Gyalpo Tantra to those of the cause and effect vehicle. If you definitely teach my tantra, they will say that there is cause and effect in virtuous and non-virtuous actions, and thus falsely slander me, the true one, and will never meet me." Also, as the Jewel Heap Sutra says: "Do not utter even a particle of these words among the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, etc. Why? Because their intelligence is small. When they hear all these words, they will be frightened, terrified, and faint. They will not believe in the secret mantras, and their minds will turn away. As a result of their ripening, they will experience the suffering of the great hot hells for sentient beings. Therefore, what need is there to mention teaching and hearing? Do not even speak in the direction of the wind." And so on, as previously stated. Specifically, the vessel to be abandoned is: reviling the lama and being angry with Dharma friends, divulging secrets and proclaiming them to the masses, and being without faith.

Those who are quick to anger and narrow-minded should be kept secret from those who are attached to this life. Those who do not respect the lama and dharma friends, who hold wrong views, who proclaim secrets and show them to everyone, who have no faith and are stingy, who are narrow-minded and believe the illusions of this life to be true, and who have other faults that make them unsuitable vessels, should not be taught, for this will cause the essential teachings and the lama's body to become enemies. As it is said in Rigpa Rangshar: "Those who do not show respect and reverence, who misuse secret mantras, who have no lineage and no patience, who are of little wisdom, who despise kindness, who speak of their own lineage, who adorn their bodies with fine ornaments, who become meaningless and talkative: an unexamined disciple is the enemy of the teacher. The meaning of Dzogchen should not be explained to those who do not practice." And as it is said in the Kunjed: "To teach an unsuitable, perverse person is to be fond of fame and worldly dharma, to be arrogant and disrespectful of holy beings, to be resentful and resistant, to desire plans and possessions and to have no faith, to be competitive, to want to force practice, to be contrary and discordant to all teachings, to slander, to cultivate the mind of harming oneself and others: this person should not be taught, it should be kept extremely secret." The vessels to be accepted are: those who are fortunate and supremely excellent vessels for Dzogchen, who respect the lama and have great wisdom, who are broad-minded and generous, who have little conceptual thought and little attachment, who renounce this life and practice enlightenment, and who have faith, diligence, and the ability to keep secrets. Those who have faith in the lama, dharma, and dharma friends, who have devotion and generosity, who have vast wisdom, who are broad-minded, who have a clear mind, who have little attachment and pure and clean conceptual thoughts, who are diligent and able to keep secrets, and who possess all the qualities of a suitable vessel, should be taught. As it is said in Rangshar: "They have the power of faith and great diligence, they have great wisdom and no attachment, they are very respectful and practice secret mantras, their non-conceptual mind is not distracted, they have vows and strive to practice, they are joyful and compassionate, they clearly and distinctly practice meditation, they act as the lama says, vows
