The Sixteenth Chapter: Showing the State of Spontaneously Accomplished Essence and Wisdom. The Sixteenth Chapter: Showing the State of Spontaneously Accomplished Essence and Wisdom. Having thus established the nature of dependent arising, now, to establish the state of the dependent essence and wisdom, there are four: the dependent body, the sound and light, the dependent wisdom, and the differentiation of the activity of enlightened action. First, the differentiation of the dependent body has two aspects: generally showing the essence of the three bodies, and specifically explaining the enumeration of the five bodies. In the first, there are two aspects: briefly stating the definition of the bodies and extensively explaining the state. The first is: in the nature of one essence with different aspects, the three bodies reside in the essence. As it says in Self-Arising: The appearance of the three bodies of wisdom is, without obstruction to anything, and the object of focus is one, the essence appears separately. Thus it is said. That is also the appearance of one awareness, as it says in that very text: Awareness without thought is the essence of the Dharmakaya. Awareness unceasing and clear is the Sambhogakaya. Awareness appearing as anything is the Nirmanakaya. Thus it is said. Here there are three: complete, purified, and expanded. Complete is, as it says in Self-Arising: In the appearance of the three pure bodies, one is complete, two are complete, all are complete. The appearance of wisdom is unceasing and clear, pure wisdom radiates light. In the pure awareness without thought, the five lights are unceasing and clear. In the great self-liberation without grasping, the outer, inner, and secret dharmas are all clear. In the awareness of abandoning action, the dharmas of action and agent are complete at once. In the awareness free from mind, various appearances are complete at once. In the great self-appearance of clarity and purity, the appearances of delusion are complete at once. In the great self-liberation and self-appearance, the dharmas arising from others are complete at once. The way the three bodies are complete is just like that. Thus it is said. Purified is the absence of dualistic grasping and delusion, as it says in that very text: Because there is no action, delusion is purified. Because there is no thought, afflictions are purified. Because there is no grasping, self-arising is purified. Because there is no attachment, conceptual thought is purified. Because there is no clinging, ignorance is purified. The way the three bodies are purified is just like that. Thus it is said. Expanded is that qualities are spontaneously accomplished and expanded from the beginning, as it says in Self-Arising: In the awareness without thought, because the five lights are clear, wisdom is expanded. Because awareness is free from action and agent, there is no object of focus.

May the three bodies increase! When awareness appears without a place, may the five lights increase in a mind without grasping. In the great wisdom of awareness, may the meaningful, self-arising fruit increase. Such is the way the three bodies increase. Secondly, there is the explanation of the increase of places. Among the explanations of the increase of the places of the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya, there are three. Firstly, there are ten aspects: essence, definition, self-nature, metaphor, sign, appearance, place, characteristic, object, and intention. The essence is emptiness-clarity, unobstructed, self-pure. From that itself: "Immutable, unobstructed, pervasive, these three are the essence of the Dharmakaya." The definition is: the nature of reality, the spontaneously accomplished, clear light body of the primordial purity of space. Therefore, the essence is the unchanging, primordial purity, the infallible dharma, and the self-nature is the spontaneously accomplished, clear light body, the great self-abiding place. From that itself: "Fearless, emptiness and clarity, and the completion of all activities, are the definition of the Dharmakaya." The self-nature is: being free from all extremes of elaboration, therefore nothing is established anywhere. From self-arising: "Without outer, without inner, without space, is the self-nature of the Dharmakaya." The metaphor is: awareness is clear like the sun, profound like the ocean, without stain like the lotus, unchanging like the mountain, vast and without beginning or end like the sky, and endowed with the confidence and innate power to subdue all like the lion. From that itself: "Sun, ocean, lotus, mountain, sky, and lion, these three are the metaphors of the Dharmakaya." Transcending going and coming is the sign. From self-arising: "Without going, without coming, without abiding, is the self-sign of the Dharmakaya." The appearance is: emptiness-clarity like the expanse of the sky. From that itself: "Unobstructed, clear radiance, essence is emptiness, is the appearance of the Dharmakaya." The place is: great purity, free from thought and conception. From that: "Immeasurable, without object, without grasping, is the place of the Dharmakaya." The characteristic is: the inseparability of essence, self-nature, and compassion. From that itself: "Essence, self-nature, and compassion, these three are the characteristics of the Dharmakaya." The object is: emptiness is uninterrupted, therefore awareness is self-luminous. The subtle inner is adorned with five lights, therefore it is spontaneously accomplished. The great space of inseparable awareness, in various
