The question was refuted and said: Then does the Alaya-consciousness not exist? Then the question was answered: The Alaya-consciousness clings to conceptual thoughts, and is deceived by various confused knowledges. The Alaya-consciousness is an object of ignorance. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya. In the Klong Drugpa it says: Therefore, if the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya are not distinguished, it is like perceiving one object as different knowledges, and it is not possible to manifest their respective meanings. The example of these two is similar to the form of the ocean and the boatman. The Dharmakaya's originally pure awareness, which has never had any defilement, is like a clear expanse of ocean. It is not established in anything, but the ability to manifest in anything does not cease. The initial basis, self-nature pure, and free from accidental defilements, therefore occupying a firm position in the expanse, is a part with both purity and impurity. The Alaya-consciousness is like a boat not entering the ocean, from the initial expanse, when confused, it becomes the basis of all ignorance, is all-pervasive, and exists as the essence, like a boat. It is filled with minds, mental factors, karma, and habitual tendencies, many confused people. In the Rangshar it says: The example of the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya is like the manner of the ocean and the boatman, this is the path. Like sleeping and waking, because there is a difference in the senses. That is to say, the undefiled awareness, the essence of the Dharmakaya, is not something to be abandoned at any time, and is the basis of ultimate liberation. The Alaya-consciousness is like sleep, the basis for the manifestation of all confused appearances of dreams, therefore it must be awakened from, the difference is very great. That is to say, although sleep and dreams need to be abandoned, one's own awareness does not need to be abandoned. Therefore, the Dharmakaya is the basis to be realized, and one must become accustomed to its state, and it must be recognized as the place of fruition liberation. The Alaya-consciousness and the phenomena that depend on it should be known as defilements to be purified. Second, the detailed explanation is divided into two parts: detailed explanation of the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya. The first part is: In the Thalgyur it says: The key points of the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya, now temporarily explain the Alaya-consciousness. It is the basis of all good and non-good, possessing essence, definition, and classification. The essence is the container of all habitual tendencies. The classification is body, combination, diversity, and original basis. The definition is all gathered together, the basis is collection and so on. As it is said, the essence, definition, classification of the Alaya-consciousness,

Now, regarding the five reasons for the entry of sound. First, the essence is: being the container for conditioned virtuous purification and all samsaric dharmas together with their habitual imprints. The definition is: in all numerous places, it exists as the basis or foundation of the gathering of many assemblies. The divisions are four: the Alaya of essential meaning, the Alaya of functional meaning, the Alaya of habitual body, and the Alaya of various habitual imprints. The first is: the basis of the initial boundary of all samsaric dharmas. It is explained from the reversal that exists in correspondence with the initial speculative flow, ignorance related to consciousness. The second is: in relation to that very consciousness, it is explained from the aspect of connecting to samsara if one is not self-aware, and connecting to nirvana if one is aware. The third is: in relation to that very root consciousness, it is explained from the aspect of having the habitual imprints of the body, blood, light, and the manifestation of the mind-body. The fourth is: in relation to that very consciousness, it is explained from the aspect of being the basis of all sources of impure actions and habitual imprints. Thus, although spoken of with four names, in reality, it is a facet of one consciousness, established because there are four different reversals. Thus, from the initial flow until now, the Alaya, which is the basis of all consciousnesses, and the eight aggregates that depend on it also abide. If divided into separate parts, the root is the basis for the opening and manifestation of samsara, which is the essential meaning; connecting to samsara and nirvana is the functional meaning; manifesting as the body is the body; the habitual imprints of mind rely on it, these are the four Alayas. At that time, because the image of consciousness exists, without interruption inside and out, it is established as the Alaya-consciousness. From this, the five sense consciousnesses, from the aspect of each consciousness holding onto the five objects without discrimination, are established as the consciousnesses of the five doors. At that time, with the discrimination of inward-looking contemplation, meeting there initially, it is consciousness; with speculative discrimination, holding onto each difference, it is considered the real meaning. One mind, because of the difference in reversals, should be known as different. The function is: the essential meaning creates the basis of delusion; the functional meaning connects body and mind, creating all connections of happiness and suffering; the body creates the causes and conditions for the body and its many gatherings of dharmas; the habitual imprints create the accumulation of actions and afflictions, and act as cause and condition. The reason for the entry of sound is: the connection between the habitual imprints of past and future, the relationship between the ripening of actions of past and future, the sequence of cause and effect, and the connection of all.
