Sixth Layer: Establishing Empowerment to Ripen the Basis. Sixth Layer: Establishing Empowerment to Ripen the Basis. Thus, having established the position of the knowable tantra as a branch of faith, now we will explain the meanings that arise from that position. First, since empowerment is the gateway to entering the unsurpassed vehicle, here, establishing its definite position has three aspects: the basis for entering empowerment, the actual path of empowerment, and the ultimate result of empowerment. The first has four aspects: the qualities of the empowering master, the nature of the disciple to be empowered, the practices to be done in common, and the activity of empowerment, which is how to empower. The first is that the master is one who has perfected all the qualities worthy of a guru and is free from all faults, and is of great compassion. As it says in Rigpa Rangshar: "The vajra-meaningful master is of good disposition and skilled in teaching. Having received empowerment, he applies the meaning of secret mantra. He knows all outer and inner activities. He is inseparable from the yidam deity. He is never distracted from samadhi. He possesses the meaningful instructions of Dzogchen. He is skilled in the secret tantras of secret mantra. He performs all outer and inner practices. He does not deviate from the meaning of the view. He abandons outer and inner secret activities. Like a jewel of qualities, he enjoys an inexhaustible treasure." And from Thalgyur: "The stages of the great Vajradhara master will be explained. The master who has perfected the qualities is the source of all qualities and holds the basis of perfect enlightenment." As it is said, here, one possesses six qualities: having abandoned the things of samsara, having few desires and being content, being skilled in practice and having experience, being skilled in the words and meanings of the tantras and being diligent in practice, being skilled in the meaning of the view and having perfected abilities, and being greatly compassionate and delighting in giving. The perfection of these is called glorious Vajradhara, because the seeds of the six lineages of disciples are emptied, the six afflictions are purified, and the meaning of the six wisdoms arises. Therefore, he possesses that ability. Also, if one divides the guru, there are the root and the branches. The first, the root guru, is one who has perfected four qualities: having established empowerment as the basis, explaining the tantras, showing the instructions, and even now being my guru.

This is about practicing the instructions taught by the Mother Tantra. The guru of the instructions is based on empowerment. Explaining the tantra is twofold. If one receives the instructions, then the guru as a branch becomes threefold. Incidentally, the Khenpo to be abandoned is, as stated in 'Self-Arisen': Not knowing but being arrogant, foolishly following words, not understanding the meaning of secret mantras, hurting others with words, being arrogant, entering the wrong path, not seeing the face of the empowerment mandala, vows being broken, unable to answer questions, having little learning but being arrogant, an unexamined guru is the demon of the disciple, not a guru who teaches secret mantras, unable to teach Dzogchen Ati, do not associate with such a person. Secondly, the nature of the disciple: turning away from the dharmas of samsara, having great respect and compassion for the guru, Dharma, and sangha, having steadfast faith and not accepting other ideas besides the Dharma, believing in the definite meaning, and having generous giving and diligence, having little attachment and a good nature, having great wisdom and abiding in vows and precepts, being in harmony with the minds of others and transforming others into the Dharma, listening to the guru's teachings and not divulging secrets, having great learning and contemplation, and taming one's own mind. In particular, having respect for the guru as a Buddha or greater than a Buddha. Having these ten qualities is a good disciple of supreme liberation, and it is certain that one will quickly obtain supreme liberation from samsara. As it is said, in 'Self-Arisen' it says: Having the power of faith and diligence, having great wisdom and no attachment, having great compassion and practicing secret mantras, without distraction in non-conceptual awareness, having vows and diligently practicing, being sincere and full of love and compassion, being clear and focused on practicing meditation, acting as the guru says, not breaking vows, acting in harmony with others' behavior, treating mind and environment with respect, remembering even a single word taught, acting accordingly for one's own benefit, being able to keep secrets, not deviating from the meaning of the vajra, relying on learned people, not deviating from one's own benefit, without arrogant words, speaking gently, harmonizing with the minds of others, the guru and the Tathagata, regarding them as one without difference. That is the disciple.
