The target of entrusting and so forth is to look at one's own face in direct perception, which is considered to be the understanding of non-duality of space and wisdom. As it is said: From the absence of letters, the unborn, directly perceived Buddha sees the sky that is without object and completely pure. How does one see it? One sees it by knowing the way of looking and the way of seeing, which will be explained below. Secondly, the essential points of the lamp have three parts: preliminary, main part, and subsequent part. The first is, in general, abandoning the activities of samsara and staying in a secluded place. In particular, for twenty-one days, abandoning all external activities, strictly closing oneself off, making offerings to the guru and dakinis, and entering the dark retreat of entrusting the ocean. That is, staying in a meditation room adorned with darkness, with the three immovables. As it is said in the *Thal 'Gyur*: Look at the flickering lamp like this: With faith, turn away from the mind of samsara, make offerings to the guru and perform the torma. Abandon all connections of samsara, in a secluded place or charnel ground, abandon companions and stay alone. Thus it is. The main part has two aspects: effortless and effortful. The effortless also has two aspects: the yoga of the natural sound of space and the yoga of the natural essence of the ocean. The first is to align the three aspects of looking, seeing, and mind, and to focus on the space twelve finger-widths away from the space between the eyebrows, without moving the eyes, without distracting the mind, and with the breath extremely slow. As it is said in the *Lamp Illuminating*: At night, in your own room, always look as if it were daytime. Thus it is. In that, first one sees something like smoke, something like billowing white clouds, something like a mirage, something like a star, something like a spark, something like a lamp, and something like a vast expanse of blue light, like the appearance of a black line of Naropa. Limitless rays of light, bindus, and empty forms of space and wisdom appear. The yoga of the ocean is to align the three essentials of looking, seeing, and breath, and instead of using three fingers, the thumb and forefinger, to gently press the eyeballs with two fingers. At first, in the appearance of reddish-purple, greenish-yellow, and blue, one feels that there is a flickering light. When the actual lamp of the empty bindu appears reddish-yellow, press it gently for a moment, and without distraction, look at that appearance with awareness. Then release the thumb and forefinger and allow the ocean to become clear and look. Again, when all those appearances are not clear, repeat.
