There is no mistake. Although the awareness that realizes the absence of grasper and grasped is nominally labeled as self-originated wisdom, it is not considered like the Yogacara-Cittamatra who say, "Self-knowing and self-illuminating," because there is no inside or outside, so it is not established as the mind within; there is no self or other, so it is not established as merely one's own awareness; because there has never been grasper and grasped, it is not established as being separate from the two; because it is not in the realm of feeling and knowing, it is not established as the absence of the two; because there is no mind or mental events, it is not established as one's own mind; because there is no clarity or non-clarity, it is not established as self-illuminating. Since awareness transcends awareness and non-awareness, it cannot even be designated as mere awareness. This is called the Great Perfection Beyond Extremes. Although the indicative terms are used to refer to it as self-originated wisdom, bodhicitta, dharmakaya, the Great Spontaneous Realm, and naked self-illuminating awareness, these are merely designations for the sake of understanding. One should realize that its nature is the Great Inexpressible. If it is not like that, but one clings to names as reality, then one will not be able to distinguish it from the self-knowing, self-illuminating, and non-dual awareness of grasper and grasped of the Cittamatra. Here, those who have not trained their intelligence but want to establish themselves here, those who clamor like madmen, because they hold the two as one, they say, "We have understood this self-knowing," which is merely speaking with manifest arrogance. In this tradition of the Great Perfection of Self-Nature, the methods of measuring such as freedom from extremes are mostly similar to the Prasangika Madhyamaka, but in Madhyamaka, emptiness-emptiness like space is taken as the basis of calculation, while here, awareness that is pure from the beginning, naked and clear, unestablished and unceasing, is taken as the basis. Then, the dharmas that arise from it and its state are measured as liberation from extremes like space. As the Prasangika says: Because the many are not abandoned, there is no speech; because the one is not established, the self-nature is pure; because the self-nature is pure, all meanings are accomplished. Self-nature pure and the basis, the basis of samsara and nirvana, accumulation and essence, without each other, are without indicative words. And again: Because there is no action, the characteristics are empty; because the object of expression is ceased, there is no abiding in extremes; because the defilements are exhausted, it is not substantial; the source of memory is ceased, the essence is clear; clear awareness does not discriminate the extremes of objects; free from sound, truly without words, all dependencies are exhausted. And as it says in the Jeweled Garland Array: The dharma of

In the realm of reality, there is neither use nor non-use. Because the nature of space is primordially pure, the Dharmakaya itself has no substantial characteristics. In the vastness without inside or outside, the nature of vastness is without extremes and without substance. This supreme Dzogchen view, the secret union, although extremely numerous in the categories of vehicles, the secret definitive meaning is one in nature, without duality. The mandala of Dharma-nature is vast and without characteristics. Thus it is said. Now, when both grasping and being grasped have never existed, and one realizes the nature of space, all phenomena appear to the yogi as a great liberation without attachment. As a sign of purifying inner grasping, the outer objects of grasping are shown to be liberated in all directions: When looking outward at the field of appearances, everything is loose, vague, and empty. There is no solidity, depth, or attachment, and it is free from phenomena. Appearances, sounds, memories, awareness, and feelings are no longer as they were before. What is this? Is it an appearance of self-nature madness, or am I laughing at myself in a dream? Here, because the time of one's own realization is certain, the appearances of all yogis can be realized. Just as one skilled in causes sees the illusionary spectacle as unreal, so too can he simultaneously realize the appearances of others who know the causes. Previously, these appearances of external objects were seen as self-characteristics, but at the time of realization, because the attachment to true clinging to self-nature is reversed, all objects of grasping are perceived as loose, vague, and empty, like dreams, water moons, and mirages. Whatever appears, one feels that there is nothing solid or deep, and one does not know whether it exists or not, arising in unattached self-display. Beings also feel that their habits have changed from before, and one wonders if everyone can realize this in the appearance of non-attachment. Feelings, hearing, memories, and awareness also disappear as before, falling into emptiness without attachment. Awareness is completely open, and thoughts do not arise at all. One wonders where this is, and in the places of arising, feeling, and abiding, self-nature is pure, and awareness is scattered. Sometimes, one's own actions and all appearances and sounds disappear without attachment, and one cannot help but laugh, wondering if one is mad, or if others are mad? Or is one in the bardo or a dream? Thus one knows. Awareness is nakedly exposed without attachment, and this is present in all beings. What difficulty is there in realization? Thinking thus, great compassion arises without discrimination.
