Nineteenth, Commentary on the Chapter on the Preliminaries of Meditation. Nineteenth, Commentary on the Chapter on the Preliminaries of Meditation. Having thus known the basis to be realized, the first thing to do in order to practice its meaning is to teach the preliminary Dharma for meditating on the meaning. Thus, having known the reality, one should meditate. The first of these preliminaries is: After taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta, meditate on the stages of generating inner and outer Mantras. The Mahayana Mantra yogi practices the union of generation and completion stages. First, starting with taking refuge and generating the mind, practice one deity hero of whatever Tantra one prefers, or one union of father and mother, or any mandala, elaborate or concise, as a preliminary. Among these, the first aspect, regarding taking refuge, one must recognize the object of refuge. Therefore, there are two objects of refuge, cause and effect, and two refuges. The object of the cause is the Three Jewels gathered from other streams of being, and the refuge is taken in the manner of a teacher and companion for the purpose of accomplishing the fruit. The object of the fruit is the Three Jewels that will arise in one's own stream of being in the future, and the refuge is to do good and engage in the cause with the aspiration to accomplish it. Here, practicing the deity mandala of the generation and completion stages is for the sake of the fruit, and accumulating merit in the field of merit is for the sake of the cause. Thus, in taking refuge, all Dharma practices are included. Now, let us distinguish them separately. First, the object of refuge is the Three Jewels themselves. As the object of the cause, it has already appeared in other streams of being. The Buddha possesses the three bodies, abandonment, realization, and activity. The Dharma is the two truths of cessation and path. The Sangha are the noble ones, the bodhisattvas who have entered the stages. One takes refuge equally in these three temporary states. The object of the cause, the Three Jewels, which helps oneself to accomplish Buddhahood, is the Buddha, the master of the nature of the perfection of the three bodies and activities, the two paths of cessation and path, and the Sangha who have entered the ground of the noble ones, so it is the Three Jewels. The ultimate object is abandonment and realization, the ultimate is the single Buddha Dharmakaya.

The ultimate refuge is the supreme one. However, because the path truth is conventional and the princes are with defilements, what ultimate refuge is there other than the Buddha himself? However, the Buddha is not a changing conventional form body, but the only Dharmakaya, which is the ultimate truth of ultimate meaning. The Dharma is also the path truth, which must be abandoned when higher fruits are attained, so it is a conventional truth. Bodhisattvas also have defilements, so they still need to take refuge in the Buddha himself, so they are not the ultimate refuge. As it says in the Uttaratantra, "The two kinds of Dharma and Sangha are not the supreme refuge. For those who seek the ultimate meaning, the only refuge is the Buddha. The Muni has the Dharmakaya, so the Sangha is also its result." So it is. The body of the Buddha in Akanishta is the Sangha, the speech is the Dharma, and the mind is the Dharmakaya, so it is the refuge, so the wise ones think. The uncommon one is the aspiration to achieve the refuge of the fruit in oneself, which is the aspiration of the Three Jewels. In the future, focusing on the manifestation of the Buddha of clear light and spontaneous accomplishment, the part of aspiration is the refuge and object of the fruit. However, aspiration is different from bodhicitta, bodhicitta is for the benefit of others, and this is for the benefit of oneself and other differences. To determine the respective differences of those who take refuge, that is, to take the refuge of the cause as the cause, and to want to achieve the refuge of the fruit of the Three Jewels in one's own mind. Taking refuge in the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as the friend. The common refuge of the cause is the cause of the unobstructed achievement of the uncommon refuge of the fruit. That is, taking the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the path, and the Sangha as the friend, so it is acknowledging the protector and savior. After determining the object in this way, how to take refuge is, that is, after knowing the refuge object, taking refuge, visualizing the Three Jewels in the sky in front, offering with real objects and imagined clouds of offerings, and joining hands with oneself and all sentient beings, directing to the three places and thinking of taking refuge. Taking refuge three times before the Lama, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and the supreme assembly.
