Because of scarcity, they are called pretas (hungry ghosts). There are three types: Those with external obscurations find even pleasant places becoming unpleasant, appearing as medicinal tree forests and great rivers drying up at the mere sight, and appearing as burnt wood, etc. The seasons are also completely reversed. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": "For the pretas, in the summer season, even the moon is hot, and in the winter, even the sun is cool." Those with internal obscurations have flames burning from their bellies, burning all their internal organs, and smoke and flames billowing from their mouths. The common obscuration is that they cannot endure hunger due to wanting food and drink, and for twelve years they cannot hear the sound of water. Even if they see water, it dries up or appears to be guarded and cannot be used. Their bodies are as large as Mount Meru, but their mouths are as small as needle eyes. The snot, vomit, and impurities discarded by practitioners and Brahmins, blessed by mantras, can barely enter their mouths at first. Once they enter, they become painful due to burning flames, etc. Even if they drink the water of the ocean, it cannot reach their throats, and they dry up due to the poison in their mouths, etc. On top of countless sufferings, they are also harmed by others, and their bodies and minds suffer much damage. As stated in the "Letter to a Student": "With a mouth as small as a needle eye, yet having to fill up with immeasurable amounts of food, the pitiful large belly, even if drinking the water of the great ocean, it cannot reach the vast depths of the throat, and the poison in the mouth even dries up the moisture of the water." The lifespan of these pretas is that one day of the pretas is equivalent to one hundred human years, and they experience suffering for five hundred years. One hundred human years is equivalent to one day of the pretas, and they live for five hundred years. As stated in the "Letter to a Friend": "The noose of evil deeds binds tightly, and some beings cannot die even after five thousand or ten thousand years." This is also calculated in human years. The third place of the lower realms is the animals, who devour each other and suffer much harm, exploitation, killing, and cutting. Their lifespans are uncertain, some lasting for eons, etc. Animals generally live in the ocean, with different shapes and colors, like the sediment of beer. Scattered in the realms of gods and humans are birds, wild animals, horses, cattle, livestock, sheep, etc., who devour each other, harm each other, are killed for their skin, bones, and meat, and are used for plowing and...

Bearing cotton, wool, and the like, being burdened like beasts of burden, and so on, suffering is endless. Regarding lifespan, some nagas live for a kalpa, while others live only for a moment, uncertain. Even in the heavens, there is no happiness; not to mention the four continents individually, humans also have no time for happiness, as there are birth, aging, sickness, death, enemies, and much harm. Separation from loved ones, poverty due to unfulfilled desires, and experiencing unwanted things. Desires are not fulfilled, enduring cold, heat, fatigue, and exhaustion. Harm in return for kindness, and ingratitude. Retinue engaging in wrongdoing, pointless jealousy, lack of praise, pointless slander, are countless. Even in the human realm, all beings, great and small, experience endless harm suited to their size. Especially in general, there is birth, aging, being afflicted by severe illness, death, encountering hateful enemies and being robbed and attacked, suffering harm, separation from beloved relatives, not obtaining desired possessions and children, experiencing unwanted things like illness and demonic influences, not fulfilling desires for possessions, dwellings, gain, and fame, and experiencing fatigue and exhaustion from cold, heat, burdens, and tasks in work and travel. Those who have been helped cause harm in return and are ungrateful. Even great people and virtuous spiritual friends are troubled by their retinue and disciples who do various unpleasant things. Pointlessly slandered by jealous people, worry due to slander, and so on, there are countless sufferings. Lifespan is uncertain; if the sound is unpleasant, one lives for a thousand years. In the other three continents, most die untimely deaths. Especially for the people of Jambudvipa, sudden deaths are numerous, so it is uncertain when one will die. Even the asuras who dwell within Mount Meru have anger, conflict, unwanted events, death, and so on. They have various sufferings and no happiness. Asuras quarrel and fight with each other, the wind of jealousy rages, and the fire of hatred burns, causing various pains, death, unfulfilled desires, and unwanted events, and so on, there are countless sufferings. Lifespan is uncertain because it belongs to the desire realm. Some powerful yakshas and other clans
