And the immeasurable river, the plain of hair-razors, and the grove of sword-leaves. In the place surrounded by Shalmali trees, the hell-beings experience various sufferings. In the vicinity of Avici Hell, in the rotting mud of corpses, the former hell-beings, having the gate opened, emerge and enter. Many worms with beaks of iron and copper pierce and devour flesh and bones. From this, thinking to attain a hundred paths of liberation, they escape outwards. In the hot river of ash, flesh and bones are burned. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The immeasurable river is like a pit of fire, in which beings sink. All flesh dissolves, and the bones are like snow, just like white kunda flowers." On both banks of the river, Yama's servants seem to guard, so there is no escape. At the end of the hundred paths of liberation, when one sets foot on the plain of hair-razors, the feet are cut off. When lifted, they revive and walk again. In the grove of swords, all the branches and leaves of the trees turn into swords, cutting the body. Mount Shalmali, with iron spikes pointing upwards and downwards, one climbs and descends upon it, and is eaten by dogs, birds, and so on. These reside in the four directions, with four places surrounding each direction, hence they are called the sixteen Utsada Hells. Suffering for half a middle kalpa, this is stated in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness. In the temporary places, the forms and colors are uncertain. In the ocean, mountains, trees, and space, or in houses, rocky mountains, and so on, one experiences the suffering of being transformed into the forms of beings, stones, trees, brooms, utensils, feces, ashes, and so on, and being used. Not cutting off the life-root also refers to this. The lifespan of those hells is as follows: The lifespan of the six, starting with Reviving Hell, is equal to the days and nights of the desire-realm gods, and they can live for that many years. The Extremely Hot Hell can live for half a middle kalpa, and Avici Hell resides for one middle kalpa. As mentioned in the previous order, adding up the years of the lifespan of the six desire-realm gods, these six, calculating one day of the Reviving Hell and so on as one day, they can each live for that many years. For example, the five hundred years of the Four Great Kings, calculating one day of the Reviving Hell as one day, they can live for five hundred years. One thousand years of the Thirty-three Gods, two thousand years of the Yama Gods, four thousand years of the Tushita Gods, eight thousand years of the Nirmanarati Gods, and sixty-six thousand years of the Paranirmitavasavartin Gods.

Those are calculated by the black lines made each day. The lifespan of the Reviving Hell is one thousand years; the Black Line Hell is two thousand years; the Calling Hell is four thousand years; the Great Calling Hell is eight thousand years; the Burning Hell can live for sixteen thousand years; the Extremely Burning Hell can live for half a middle kalpa; the Avici Hell can live for one middle kalpa. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The six hells, starting with the Reviving Hell, are sequentially equal to the lifespan and days and nights of the desire realm gods." The cold hells are said to be located adjacent to them. In the ice and snow blizzards, the eight kinds of beings tormented by extreme cold are: the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Kyihuhu Hell, the Chattering Teeth Hell, the Lotus-like Cracked Hell, the Blue Lotus-like Cracked Hell, and the Great Lotus-like Cracked Hell. They are tormented by the cold, and their suffering is endless. In the places tormented by ice and snow blizzards, where it is extremely cold in the snow, there are eight hells. The hell where blisters the size of thumbs appear due to the cold is the Blister Hell. The hell where those blisters burst and become pus-filled is the Bursting Blister Hell. The Achuchu Hell is named after the sound of "Achuchu." The Kyihuhu Hell is named after only being able to make the sound "Kyihuhu." The hell where one cannot make a sound and becomes stiff, with teeth chattering, is the Chattering Teeth Hell. The hell where the body cracks into four pieces is the Lotus-like Cracked Hell. The hell where those wounds turn inside out and are connected by thin water veins is the Blue Lotus-like Cracked Hell. The hell where the body cracks into sixteen or thirty-two pieces, or a hundred or a thousand pieces, is the Great Lotus-like Cracked Hell. Their lifespans are: From a sesame heap that can hold a hundred khals, taking out one sesame seed every hundred years until the sesame heap is exhausted, this is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespans of the remaining hells are twenty times longer in sequence. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "From a sesame heap, taking out one sesame seed every hundred years until the sesame heap is exhausted, this is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespans of the other hells are twenty times longer." Next is the second place of the lower realms, the pretas who suffer from the torment of hunger and thirst. Pretas with external obscurations dry up even when they see good things. Pretas with internal obscurations have their hearts and lungs burning. Pretas with shared karmic obscurations can only imagine food and drink. They cannot hear the sound of water even after twelve years, and they only see others harming and protecting each other. They are always thinking only of food and drink because of hunger.
