Seventeenth: Commentary on the Chapter on Contemplating the Suffering of Samsara and Thinking of Nirvana as Bliss. Seventeenth: Commentary on the Chapter on Contemplating the Suffering of Samsara and Thinking of Nirvana as Bliss. Thus, because of believing in karma and the ripening of karma, and because contemplating the nature of samsara leads to joy in liberation, therefore, following what was just said. Then, one should contemplate that samsara is suffering, because it is without essence and cannot be permanent. From the suffering of the three realms and six classes of beings in existence, one should strive for a way to quickly escape. Due to the nature of karma and afflictions, without freedom, passing from one to another, the sentient beings of the three realms and six classes have no happiness and are drowning in a river of suffering, which is difficult to bear and not permanent, because it is without essence. One must quickly escape from this place. As Candrapa said, "Just as there is no fragrance in impure things, so too there is no happiness in the five migrations." So, shouldn't one stay for a long time without being weary of samsara? Answer: Initially, without mastering one's own temperature, one does not have the ability to accomplish the benefit of others. Therefore, in the place of practice, one must definitely emerge from samsara. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra, "If one vows to liberate beings from afflictions, but one's own self is still bound by afflictions, that is truly laughable. If one cannot liberate oneself, how can one liberate others?" Also, as it says in the Sūtrālaṃkāra, "The great heroes who carry the heavy burden of sentient beings on their heads do not look good walking slowly. Because self and others are bound by various bonds, one should make a hundredfold effort." Now, from the detailed explanation of the categories of suffering. First, from within the hells, the suffering of the hot hells is: In the hell realms, there is immeasurable suffering. In the Reviving Hell, they stab each other with weapons. Again and again, the suffering of birth and death is unbearable. The first of the eight hot hells, those who dwell in the Reviving Hell, when hatred arises as if seeing enemies, various weapons naturally appear in their hands, and they strike each other and die. As soon as the sound "May you be revived" comes from the sky, they are immediately revived as before, and immediately they fight with weapons, only to be born and die. As in the Friendly Letter.

Here, in one day, three hundred short spears stab. What is the suffering of being fiercely struck? Even the smallest suffering of that hell. Cannot be tolerated, cannot be endured. So it is said. Seven times more suffering than that is the hell. Black line, cut with an iron saw. Gather and destroy, grind in mountains, mortars, and fields. Crying and screaming, burning in a blazing iron house. Great crying and screaming, burning in a two-layered iron house. An iron saw, after drawing black lines on the body with burning flames, cuts and sticks, and then cuts again, is the Black Line Hell. Between mountains and mortars. In the fields. Burning iron hammers fall from the sky and grind like flour, which is Gathering and Destroying, and then reviving. Burning in an iron house without doors is Crying and Screaming. Burning in a two-layered iron house is Great Crying and Screaming. Seven times greater suffering than those is. On the hot ground blazing with fire. Skin is peeled off and propped up with stakes. Extremely hot, inside and out burned by fire. Molten copper is poured and the whole body is burned to ashes. Hot is, on the iron ground blazing with fire, the skin of the body is peeled off, propped up with stakes, and hammered on top. Extremely hot, fire from outside, above, below, and all directions, and fire burning in the heart and lungs from within, so it is burned by eleven piles of fire. Furthermore, there are burning iron hammers. Molten copper is involuntarily poured into the mouth, and the body burns like sweat. Of all those, seven times greater suffering is the last place. Avici, unbearable in a burning iron house. Beating, stabbing, cutting, and grinding into powder. Boiling, piercing, and wrapping with burning iron plates. There is no greater suffering than that, and no greater torment than that, therefore it is Avici. In the burning iron house, the servants of Yama beat with hammers. Stab with knives, cut with saws. Grind in mortars. Boil in large pots. Pierce with spears and tridents and other weapons. With burning iron rods. The body is wrapped like tying the head and tail with ropes, etc., there are countless sufferings. Of that place. Outside, in the four directions, there are sixteen neighboring places. Decaying mud
