Having understood liberation, one engages in the practice of the path. As stated in the Ornament of Clear Realization: "To abandon the conceptualization of the object of grasping, and because the grasper is not abandoned, the path that relies on something like a rhinoceros horn should be known as having perfectly gathered." Thus, even in the treatises of the lower vehicle, in order to distinguish the subtle differences in views and tenets, two types are explained here. First, regarding the establishment of the Hearers: Hearers have the nature of a group and tenets, and are truly of three types. Regarding the establishment of the Hearer Vehicle, there are three: the divisions of the individual schools, the nature of seeking liberation, and the detailed distinctions of tenets. The first point is: The distinction between the Mahasanghika and the Sthavira led to the emergence of eighteen schools, and later further divisions occurred. This was three hundred and sixteen years after the Buddha's nirvana, in the city adorned with flowers in Kashmir (Khache), King Dharma Ashoka, known as the righteous king Ashoka the Sorrowless, appeared. At that time, the evil Mara Papiyas transformed into a bhikshu and created a great schism, causing confusion in the sangha. At that time, the young majority who held the sutras gathered in one place, forming the Mahasanghika school; the older minority who held the Vinaya gathered in one place, and were known as the Sthavira school. Due to the different emphasis on the Vinaya spoken by the Buddha and the sutras that were mainly recognized, the tenets also differed, and the number of offenses and the basis of training also varied. Later, the Mahasanghika gradually divided into eight schools: the split Mahasanghika, the Ekavyavaharika, the Lokottaravada, the Bahusrutiya, the Cetiyavada, the Purvasaila, and the Aparasaila. The Sthavira also divided into ten schools: the Haimavata, the Sarvastivada, the Hetuvada, the Vatsiputriya, the Dharmaguptaka, the Bhadrayaniya, the Sammatīya, the Dharmottariya, the Sanghavasaka, and the Mahisasaka. Thus, there were eighteen schools. Later, the Sarvastivada was also further divided into the Sarvastivada and the Kasyapiya. The Mahisasaka also divided into the Dharmapala and the Lāmaka. The Vatsiputriya also divided into the Dharmottariya and the Samkrantivadin. The Sammatīya

Reverence and Dharmottara, and the virtuous path people have also been said to have separated. The four fundamental schools are: the Sthavira school, the Sarvastivada school, the Mahasamghika school, and the Dharmaguptaka school. As it says in the 'Two Examinations': 'The Sthavira, the Sarvastivada, the Sarvasamghika, and the Mahasamghika.' That's how it is. There are also other ways to divide these into eighteen schools, which can be understood in my treatise 'The Precious Treasury of Tenets.' Among them, the Sthavira school is included in the Vaibhashika school, and the Mahasamghika school is said to be included in the Sautrantika school. The etymology of each of these schools is: the Mahasamghika sangha, which holds the sutras, was cut off in one direction, so it is called the Mahasamghika school. From that, it was also the first to separate, so it is the separated Mahasamghika. Because they believe that the Buddha knows all knowable things in a single instant, they are called the 'Saying One Word' school. Because they say that the Buddha does not possess worldly dharmas, they are called the 'Saying Transcendental' school. Because they are taught by a learned teacher, they are called the 'Many Teachers' school. When examining compounded things, they say that particles are always constant, so they are called the 'Saying Constant' school. Because they live on a mountain with a stupa, they are called the 'Stupa' school. Because they live on the eastern mountain adorned with flowers, they are called the 'Living on the Eastern Mountain' school. Because they live on the western mountain, they are called the 'Living on the Western Mountain' school. Because they are of the Sthavira lineage, they are the Sthavira school. The Himavat school is the one that lives on the snowy mountain. Because they say that the three times and the five aggregates are substantially existent, they are called the 'Saying Existent' school. Among the three times, some actions that produce results do not exist, and some actions that do not produce results do exist, so they are the 'Saying Differentiated' school. Because they teach the doctrine of the red-robed ones, they are the red-robed ones. Because they say that everything that has happened and will happen has a cause, they are the 'Saying Cause' school. The son of a wandering woman who was ordained by being called 'Come here,' but still affirms an inexpressible self, is the 'Dwelling Mother and Son' school. Because they follow the teacher Dharmottara, they are the Dharmottara school. Because they are disciples of the virtuous path, they are the Virtuous Path school. Because everyone reveres them, and they proclaim the teacher's doctrine, they are the 'Everyone Reveres' school. Because they teach many people that there will be no more rebirth, they are the 'Many Teachers' school. Because they proclaim the doctrine of Dharmaraksha, they are the Dharmaraksha school. The rain of the supreme Dharma...
