Homage to the glorious and virtuous Lama! Samsara is vast, with no beginning or end in sight; it is unfathomably deep, becoming deeper and deeper without end; its momentum is strong, with the currents of karma flowing everywhere; it is unbearable, with turbulent waves and swirling eddies. Upwards, it takes the peak of existence as its surface; downwards, it penetrates the ground of Avici hell as its bottom; in between, gods, humans, and evil destinies swirl within its depths. It is difficult for anyone to escape, and cruel crocodiles of various sufferings frolic within it. Therefore, one must embark on the precious raft adorned by the captain, the Lama, who is the helmsman of the supreme Dharma boat, and cross over this precious human existence that has now been attained. If one does not strive, one will fall into the abyss of samsaric evil destinies and never have a time of liberation. Therefore, having generated the mind of liberation, just as those who wish to cross a river first pray to the boatman, those who wish to embark on the Dharma boat and cross the ocean of existence must first rely on the Lama, the boat-holding helmsman, and strive to please him. That Lama must also be one who possesses the qualities. Even to cross a mere river, one relies on a good boat and a skilled and strong oarsman, how much more so to be liberated from the endless river of samsara. Therefore, relying on a Lama who is proficient in Dharma and possesses the qualities of wisdom and accomplishment is the most precious instruction for those who desire the island of liberation. Among them, there are many kinds of Lamas who possess the qualities, but here they are summarized into seven to explain. First, the qualities of the wish-fulfilling jewel Lama are explained: That is, skilled in means, possessing immeasurable compassion; possessing the treasury of Sutras and Tantras like a wish-fulfilling jewel, guiding beings; the Lama who is free from faults and perfect in qualities is like a real Buddha in this degenerate age. Serve him with respect and reverence, bowing with the crown of your head. That is to say, he is skilled in achieving great things with small efforts, has endless compassion for others, and benefits countless beings. With the pure eye of wisdom, he has widely heard and learned the meaning of the Sutras and Tantras spoken by the Sugata, possessing a vast Dharma treasury. With immeasurable altruistic activities, he reverses the fate of beings and guides them to the path of liberation. Body, speech, and mind

Since there is no impurity of non-virtue, he is free from all faults and fulfills all the wishes of himself and others. That lama, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, is like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Nowadays, in this degenerate age, he is no different from the real Buddha. Therefore, it is advised to hold him on the crown of your head with great faith. As it is said in the "King of the Array of Qualities": 'Son of a lineage, you should rely on those virtuous spiritual friends who are learned, clear, and completely moistened with compassion.' The second characteristic: The lama who is perfect in his own qualities is: of good lineage, with shame and modesty, complete senses. He has love and compassion, great wisdom, much learning, three doors of body, speech and mind are subdued, and he has great patience. He is honest and without hypocrisy. Like a wish-fulfilling jewel, he is held on the crown of hundreds of faiths. The qualities of lineage, born in a noble lineage such as the royal family, are therefore great in shame and modesty. In previous lives, he accumulated wealth, so his senses are complete and pure. Born in the Mahayana lineage, he has great love and compassion. He is skilled in the nature of the supreme vehicle, so he is broad-minded. The karma of previous practice has awakened, so he has great innate wisdom. Because grasping and afflictions are small, he is subdued and has patience. Because he seeks the Dharma, there are many avenues of hearing. The three doors of body, speech and mind are naturally subdued, so he is honest and without hypocrisy. Abandoning inferior conduct, he has faith in the true place. As it is said in the Gongdü: 'Good lineage, peaceful mind, subdued heart, dignified, majestic, not entering the country. Knowing that the merits of knowledge are inexhaustible, he has immeasurable and vast wisdom. Able to endure adversity, always upright. Honest and without hypocrisy in conduct. Abandoning all vulgar paths. Abandoning agitation and distraction, relying on solitude. Whoever has these qualities is worthy of being a holy object.' The third characteristic: The most excellent lama who is completely liberated from samsara is: far away from his homeland, abandoning worldly dharmas. He has little attachment to unnecessary wealth and possessions. He has faith in cause and effect, and accepts and rejects good and evil. He gives up this life and accomplishes great long-term goals. He skillfully practices the work of benefiting beings with the meaning of the Mahayana. After investigation, he is a virtuous Dharma king with merits. Always inseparable, he relies on him without weariness. Because he has severed ties with his homeland, he is far away from the place of birth. Because he knows that samsara is the root of suffering, he does not
