Fourth, Explanation of the Chapter on the Nature of the Formation of Sentient Beings. Fourth, Explanation of the Chapter on the Nature of the Formation of Sentient Beings. Thus, after explaining how the vessel world is formed, next is how sentient beings are formed. From the three realms of the formless, form, and desire realms, just as the vessel also appears there from the habits of beings, it is certain that the appearer will also become a sentient being, this is the nature of reality. That is, the divisions of sentient beings of the formless, form, and desire realms are indeed condensed into three, because the nature of the three objects of experience are condensed into three. Now, if desire also exists as form, why is it that only the gods of meditative concentration are referred to with the term 'form'? Like this, although they are similar in form, the supreme form that obtains the result of virtue born from contaminated aggregates is the supreme, clear, and luminous form of meditative concentration. In the desire realm, there is only a similar aspect of that, and since the aspects of maturation and qualities are not the same, the term 'form' is not applied to the desire realm with a negating term that excludes what the inferior lacks. In some scriptures, it is said that there are two kinds of beings, namely form and formless. According to this view, the desire and form realms are grouped into one category, so the term 'form' is also applied. Another view is that desire is above the realm of form, because there is an excess of desire for coarse sensual pleasures, so it is referred to by the term of the main nature. Some say that words are determined by convention, so they cannot be explained, but this is not reasonable, because the different meanings of realms and categories can be explained individually. Thus, dwelling in the three divisions of the categories or realms of sentient beings, first, the nature of the formless is explained: As before, confused from the initial clear light, held by the seed of ignorance, lost in the four concentrations, the four formless realms spread from top to bottom. The initial cause of the formless realm is the essence of clear light, with co-emergent ignorance as the cause, and the manner in which it arises by taking as its immediate condition the awareness covered by the four categories of non-conceptual concentration has already been explained in the first chapter along with the scriptures. In the three existences, the time of transmission from one to another

The causes for being born into the formless realm from the desire realm and the form realm are: each individual's awareness is like an arrow; the proximate cause is the view of emptiness with the fault of quiescence, like a target; the factor that propels one to higher realms is the karma corresponding to merit, like the string and thumb of a bow being released; reaching and abiding in the place of the formless realm, like a target, is due to accumulating delusion, resulting in straying into the four dhyanas. That is, the fourth dhyana is merely the clarity where the object of appearance is not obstructed, because one clings to the experience of neither existence nor non-existence and cultivates it without conceptual thought of unclear objects, one is born into the peak of existence, i.e., the realm of neither perception nor non-perception. Third, moistened by the joy and bliss of pacifying conceptual thought, one cultivates detachment from objects in a state of not focusing on anything, and thus is born into the realm of nothingness. Second, cultivating a dhyana that only has investigation, when clarity arises, one cultivates only consciousness by blocking sensation, and thus strays into the realm of infinite consciousness. First, when the coarse consciousness with conceptual thought disappears and the object is unclear, one cultivates a state of emptiness like the sky, and thus strays into the realm of infinite space. These four dhyanas into which one strays are also, first, from the essence of the fundamental clear light, during delusion, they spread from above downwards, and when they revolve with each other, one is born into whichever of the four dhyanas is accomplished on the previous basis, and some do not attain the higher dhyanas but gradually fall from below downwards, and some transfer from the dhyana they have attained to other existences, so it is uncertain. However, mostly after attaining these four formless absorptions, the tendency is to gradually fall downwards, at the time of death, from the state of the peak of existence, only the consciousness of the realm of nothingness arises, becoming slightly coarser than before, and because that consciousness corresponds to the sensation of bliss, one clings to that state and falls there. Similarly, at the time of death in the realm of infinite consciousness, the consciousness of the realm of infinite space arises, and one is born with the corresponding experience, because one has been accustomed to the state of dhyana for a long time, it is very easy to accomplish that consciousness there. The power of accomplishment of the mind of that place is able to hold onto rebirth, just as one is born there after accomplishing the mind of the formless realm from either the desire realm or the form realm. So, what kind of sentient beings gradually accomplish those dhyanas? What kind of sentient beings do not complete them in order?
