Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa, JNLD127: A Clear Explanation of the Practice of the Thousand Offerings Ritual Based Primarily on the Stupa Vase of the Nine-Deity Practice of Ushnishavijaya. 7-277 A Clear Explanation of the Practice of the Thousand Offerings Ritual Based Primarily on the Stupa Vase of the Nine-Deity Practice of Ushnishavijaya. A Clear Explanation of the Practice of the Thousand Offerings Ritual Based Primarily on the Stupa Vase of the Nine-Deity Practice of Ushnishavijaya. Om Swasti (auspicious words). Guru Buddha Bodhisattva Namo Namah (गुरु बुद्ध बोधिसत्त्व नमो नमः,guru buddha bodhisattva namo namah,Homage to the Guru, Buddha, and Bodhisattva! Homage! Homage!). Wisdom goddess, wondrous manifestation, Perfectly embodying manifold forms. Dispelling inner darkness, with nectar-like white light, May you be completely victorious here! Therefore, the vidya-mantra of Ushnishavijaya, spoken and blessed by eighty-eight great rivers of Ganges of Buddhas. It completely purifies all obscurations of evil destinies and karma, guides the path to good destinies and happiness, and quickly attains the state of immortality. Therefore, those who are wise and practice the path of mantra should diligently engage in this practice. The elaborate mandala ritual of this practice will be written elsewhere. Based on the yoga of the nine deities, the bathing ritual and thousand offerings, etc., are the practices of the previous lamas, which will be recorded here. The preliminary preparations for this ritual are as follows: On a square platform, arrange the vase in the usual manner. On top of the vase, place the stupa of Ushnishavijaya, which contains the essence of this mantra. On a higher platform, place offering bowls or copper bowls filled with pure water, milk, and white flowers. The arrangement of other offerings can follow the practice of some later lamas: starting with the boundary-marking flowers and offering water in the northeast, up to the food offerings, the seven offerings can be arranged clockwise from east to north. In front, place water for offering and foot washing. On the right, place flowers, incense, and lamps (three). On the left, place food and perfume, and lamps (three again). In the back, place the boundary markers, or on the right, place the five sensual offerings, and on the left, place two cups of water, etc. It is not necessary to be completely fixed. Similarly, the transcendent torma, the torma of the Four Great Kings, and the three portions are generally not fixed in direction. The transcendent torma is placed in the center of the mandala. 7-278 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How should the offerings in front of the mandala, and the tormas (food offerings) of the Four Great Kings (Lokapala) in the four outer directions, be arranged properly? If it is not appropriate this way, then connect the tip of the Akshobhya (immovable Buddha) torma in the east to the tormas of the Four Great Kings, and place these three parts in a suitable direction. It is not necessary to insist on the south. There is no scriptural or logical basis for this. Generally, the vase and the face of the statue should face east. If performing a thousand offerings (stong mchod), it is necessary to prepare a thousand portions of food, a thousand lamps, and a thousand incenses. In addition, if conditions permit, umbrellas and banners should also be prepared in thousands. If conditions do not permit, then it should be handled according to the situation. Even a small piece of cloth or silk will do. However, writing on poisonous paper or using dirty old cloth paintings will not work. Doing so will not only not help the accomplishment of the intended purpose, but will also offend the deities in the mandala, and this bad practice will undermine good practice, so it should be avoided. These offerings can be placed around the edge of the vase mandala, or they can be placed on other platforms and offered from the four directions. Even a thousand tormas can be placed in this way, but arranging the torma containers separately is the main practice. In addition, all the necessary musical instruments and other items should be prepared, and these can be learned from practical experience. Then, before doing everything, one must first bathe and cleanse. Visualize the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Sangha, etc. filling the sky, and then perform brief or detailed prostrations. These have already been explained in detail in the gradual practice rituals for beginners. Then, recite the seven-branch prayer extracted from the 'Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct' three times, and play large musical instruments at the three offering verses such as 'Excellent flowers and garlands'. Now there is a practice of taking the vows of fasting (bsnyen gnas) oneself. If all those who perform the ritual have taken the vows of a novice monk (dge tshul) or higher and have not violated them, then there is no need to take the vows of fasting. If they have not taken the vows of a novice monk or a fully ordained monk, then they must take them. If those who have taken and have not taken monastic vows are mixed together, then it is necessary to treat them differently. However, in this degenerate age, for this kind of seemingly formal Dharma assembly, those who have not taken monastic vows, while taking the vows of fasting, the monks and nuns should also for as long as they live... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
