Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD52: 'A Clear Exposition on the Discrepancies in the Vinaya Necessary for a Bhikshu, Called 'The Bright Mirror of Jewels'' 'A Clear Exposition on the Discrepancies in the Vinaya Necessary for a Bhikshu, Called 'The Bright Mirror of Jewels'' 'A Clear Exposition on the Discrepancies in the Vinaya Necessary for a Bhikshu, Called 'The Bright Mirror of Jewels'' Homage to the Omniscient! Here, regarding the Vinaya of full ordination necessary for the practice of a bhikshu, generally, if the offenses entailing expiation are classified as one category, there are five categories. However, here they are separated into six categories. Therefore, according to this classification, the discrepancies are the six categories of offenses: First, the four parajikas (defeats): The first is the parajika of taking life. A bhikshu who has taken vows, the object of killing is a human being or a fetus, a different continuum from oneself. The thought is to have no mistaken recognition of that object. The motivation is a continuous intention to kill. The action is to begin killing with poison, weapons, etc., and not to stop. The result is that the life of the one to be killed is cut off before the killer himself dies. Second, the parajika of taking what is not given. A bhikshu who has taken vows, the object of stealing is property not belonging to the same person as the land, property of value possessed by human beings. The thought is to recognize it as human property, or to be in doubt. The motivation is a continuous desire to steal for one's own livelihood. The action is to begin stealing valuable objects through physical and verbal actions, whether by oneself or by others. The result is that one steals oneself or causes others to steal, separating the stolen object from its owner and generating the thought of possessing it. Third, the parajika of unchaste conduct. A bhikshu who has taken vows, the object of reliance is a limb capable of generating the pleasure of sexual intercourse, a reproductive organ that is more than half of the body, including one of the three undamaged and functional orifices of the mouth, anus, or urethra, and the one who engages in sexual activity is one's own healthy and usable penis. The thought is to be without shame or fear and to be lustful. The motivation is a continuous desire to experience tactile pleasure. The action is to insert a jewel, touch, play, and rub against the object of reliance. The result is to obtain pleasure beyond the boundaries of the three paths, that is, to experience pleasure with the body and to possess it in the mind. Fourth, the parajika of false speech. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A fully ordained monk with Pratimoksha vows, under what circumstances does the object of lying constitute? When the object is someone from a different lineage than oneself, possessing five conditions: being a person, being able to speak, understanding the meaning, consciousness naturally existing (not without mind), and not being a hermaphrodite or bisexual. The content spoken is transcendent of the desire realm, any mundane or supramundane qualities from the first dhyana to Buddhahood. The thought is to alter perception, understanding in an untrue manner. The motivation is to generate the intention to lie in order to deceive others. The action is, even without possessing extraordinary qualities such as clairvoyance, to lie with six characteristics of speech, claiming to have superior spiritual attainments, or agreeing with the lies spoken by others. The final result is that others understand the lie. The six characteristics of speech are: being speech, being one's own, being related to oneself, being without error, being clear, and being spoken directly. Such four kinds of downfall are called 'Parajika' because these faults destroy the antidote, rendering it ineffective. These four Parajikas include the root downfall of restoring vows through confession, the unhidden sin that can still be restored even if the root downfall is committed, and the hidden sin that cannot be restored. The second category is the thirteen Sanghavasesa offenses. The first is the offense of emitting semen: In a place where sexual intercourse is not permissible, i.e., not the three paths (mouth, genitals, anus), but on one's own or another's body part, with the intention of ejaculating, touching one's penis and rubbing, causing semen to move from the sexual organ and experiencing pleasure. The second is the offense of touching a woman's body: For a woman with whom sexual intercourse is possible, wanting to touch due to lust, directly touching her body or parts such as hair, touching without any barrier and experiencing pleasure. The third is the offense of speaking obscene words: For a woman with whom sexual intercourse is possible, due to lust, at that time speaking vulgar words that directly refer to sexual intercourse, and the other person is able to understand. The fourth is the offense of praising offerings: For a woman, seeking sexual intercourse due to lust, in order to receive offerings of sexual intercourse, saying oneself or agreeing with the other person saying 'A monk like me, if offered with sexual intercourse, that would be the most supreme of all offerings,' and the other person is able to understand. The fifth is the offense of acting as a matchmaker: Arranging for men and women other than oneself to have sexual relations. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
