The Collection of Teachings by Master Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD35: The Method of Accomplishing the Causes and Conditions for Birth in Sukhavati - The Excellent Path to a Pure Land The Method of Accomplishing the Causes and Conditions for Birth in Sukhavati - The Excellent Path to a Pure Land Homage and Promise to Compose By the supreme accumulation of immeasurable merit, The majestic wisdom body adorned with beauty and splendor. Wonderful, the red light of infinite radiance blazes, I bow to the protector who possesses great compassion. In the pure land held by the Victorious One, From the interdependence of compassion, causes, and conditions, For the fortunate ones who desire to experience the amazing feast of joy, I will explain in brief the method of fulfilling their heart's desires. Here, all sentient beings who seek liberation must strive to overcome all the defilements that have bound them for a long time and repeatedly cause unbearable suffering. This is of utmost importance, and one should never slacken in this endeavor. Therefore, to practice this path, one must accumulate vast stores of wisdom, which are the antidote to overcoming defilements. To achieve this, one must rely on a spiritual friend and engage in listening, contemplation, and meditation on the Dharma. In particular, one must have excellent external conditions. Because there are so many favorable conditions, one can greatly increase the progress on the path from moment to moment. Those who wish to travel to the supreme pure land should practice the easy and excellent methods for accumulating the causes for taking birth in that special field. The methods of practice are threefold: the causes that enable practice, how to practice, and the results of practice. First, in general, the pure land of Sukhavati in the west is far superior to many other Buddha-fields. In the past, when King Amitabha was on the path of learning, he became the bodhisattva Dharmakara in the presence of the Buddha Lokesvararaja and made forty-eight extraordinary vows. At that time, he made the astonishing vow: 'If I do not achieve a special pure land that fully possesses the qualities of a hundred billion nayutas of Buddha-fields, I will not attain enlightenment.' Thus, he donned the armor of courageous resolve. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nowadays, all the accumulations of learning are the complete self-result, the special pure land of the emanation body (sprul sku). And the main deity of that land, the Victorious Amitābha ('od mtha' yas pa), the activity of his compassionate actions, Is also extremely great and supreme. In the past, during the time of learning, he was not satisfied with the deeds of other Victorious Ones, and took on the courage of vast aspirations. As stated in the Sutra of the White Lotus of Compassion (snying rje pad dkar gyi mdo) and others, if we examine it, as the cause of being born in the land of the Victorious One himself, For the individual (gang zag) who accumulates the accumulations, even if he himself has not matured great roots of virtue, if he does not accumulate the deeds of abandoning the Dharma (chos spong) and the five inexpiable sins (mtshams med kyi las), then there is not much difficulty in accumulating the accumulations, and relying on the virtue of easy means, and the interdependent power of the gathering of one's own accumulation and the compassion of the Buddha, Those practitioners (sgrub po) are able to take birth in the realm of the Victorious One, and it can be known that the Victorious One himself possesses great activity and actions. Even ordinary beings can accumulate the accumulations for being born in the Land of Great Bliss, and be born there. The reason why it is possible is that the special pure land is the self-result of the power of profound prayers of the past. In the past, the monk Dharma Source (chos kyi 'byung gnas) made the aspiration: When I attain enlightenment and hold a pure land, remember my form, Recite my name, read the sutras, etc., and dedicate all the roots of virtue as the cause of being born in that land. If you do not commit the deeds of abandoning the Dharma and the five inexpiable sins, then all of these will definitely be born in my land in the next life, possessing the rank of power over such activities, Before that is attained, I vow not to attain Buddhahood, and his intention of promise is fulfilled as it is. Any being who remembers the form of the Thus-Gone One (de bzhin gshegs pa), the Wheel-Turning King ('khor gyi rgyal po), the two chief sons, etc., Accumulates virtue from many doors, such as reciting sutras and prostrating, and dedicates all those roots of virtue as the cause of being born in that land, then anyone who does not possess the aforementioned evil deeds can be born there, as stated in the reliable commentaries. Therefore, those born in that land not only include the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas of the Great and Small Vehicles, but also ordinary beings who have not yet entered the path. Even ordinary people, remembering the Buddha and his retinue, accumulate roots of virtue from many doors, and dedicate all of these as the cause of being born in that land, and are not associated with the great evil deeds.
