Ngawang Kunga Lodro's Teachings NKL23: The Practice Ritual of the Four Mandalas of Praise to the Noble Tara, Spontaneously Accomplished. The Practice Ritual of the Four Mandalas of Praise to the Noble Tara, Spontaneously Accomplished. Preparation. The Practice Ritual of the Four Mandalas of Praise to the Noble Tara, Spontaneously Accomplished. Namo Guru Arya Tareye. Homage to the Guru, Noble Tara). She who first generated the mind of enlightenment, To tame those to be tamed with skillful means, She whose activities are shown as a goddess, To her who liberates from samsara, I bow. Relying on her, the means to quickly accomplish all desired attainments, both temporary and ultimate, I will write a clarification of the ritual spoken by the glorious Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen. Here, regarding the ritual of the four-mandala praise and practice of the Jetsun Noble Tara, although Kunga Tsultrim, Khenchen Sangye Phuntsog, and the mantra holder Kunga Tashi have each composed texts in later times, the root text of the Jetsun Rinpoche Drakpa Gyaltsen's writings is somewhat inconsistent. Therefore, here, the writings of the Jetsun Master, with the text composed by the Dharma Lord Lama Dampa Sonam Gyaltsen as a clarification, will address any doubts that arise, and facilitate the practice of the three parts: preparation, main practice, and conclusion. As it is said in the writings of the Jetsun Master, the supplication for the four mandalas has three parts: Preparation, main practice, and conclusion. The first has four parts: time, place, support, and arrangement of offerings. If it is for accumulating merit, it should be done on the eighth day of the month or on the new moon. If it is for dispelling obstacles, it should be done at times when obstacles such as epidemics, evil spirits, thieves, enemy armies, and bad dreams arise. If it is for accomplishing desires, it should be done in the morning or at the time when the desired activity is to be accomplished. These are the times. The place should be a pleasant place such as a temple or a shrine. The third, the support, is to arrange representations of the guru, yidam, and the general assembly of the Three Jewels, such as thangkas or paintings, as appropriate. One image or painting of Jetsunma should be placed. The offerings should be adorned with banners, yak tail whisks, and so on, as appropriate. The mandala should be drawn with four rounded, double-circled sections. Alternatively, four mandalas made of wood or rattan. If there is only one, it should be offered in rotation. Four flowers, four lamps, four tormas, and water for drinking and bathing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, arrange the offerings, four of each item. If not available, arrange whatever is possible. When offering flowers, pile them in copper basins or other vessels, and scatter them during prayers. According to the above, on days such as the eighth, clean the temple where many supports of body, speech, and mind are kept, or one's own residence, and arrange as much adornment of the three realms of heaven, earth, and man as possible. In front of the supports such as the image of Jetsunma (尊圣母,the venerable mother), cover a five-tiered altar with clean cloth, etc., and scatter grains on it. Place a set of five water offerings in front, and four tormas (食子,ritual cake) on the lower tier. In front of these offerings, arrange four sets of thirty-seven-heap or seven-heap mandalas. If simplifying, one set of offerings, tormas, and mandalas is sufficient. Face the support yourself, and place a vajra bell (金刚铃,a ritual bell), hand drum, or ting-shag (丁夏,a pair of small cymbals) on the altar in front as a preliminary practice. Main practice: Taking refuge and generating bodhicitta (菩提心,the mind of enlightenment), and praying to the common deities. The second part is the main practice, which is divided into three aspects: taking refuge and generating bodhicitta, praying to the common deities, and praying to Jetsunma. The first part is to recite the refuge verse 'The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha (僧伽,community)' etc., until 'I take refuge until I achieve enlightenment', while remembering its meaning in your heart. The second part is to pray to the common deities: first prostrate to the root guru, then to the yidam (本尊,tutelary deity), then to the Buddha, then to the Bodhisattva (菩萨,enlightenment being). First offer the offerings and mandala, then recite the abbreviated or detailed seven-branch offering, and then you can pray for the wishes you want to achieve. Thus it is said. Dharma Lord Lama said: The first step is: bless the offerings with the mantra of Vajra Yaksha (金刚夜叉,Vajra Yaksha), then purify with स्वाभाव (svabhāva). In emptiness, from ॐ (oṃ, seed syllable) arise precious vessels, from the first letter of each name arise the respective substances. Bless them with their respective mantras, and descend the blessings with the vajra bell (वज्रघण्ट,vajra-ghaṇṭa) and musical instruments. If simplifying, following the Dharma Lord's ritual is sufficient. If you want to be detailed, bless and purify the offerings, in emptiness, from ॐ (oṃ, seed syllable) arise vast vessels made of precious jewels, in which, from ॐ (oṃ, seed syllable) arise water for washing feet, from पཾ (paṃ, seed syllable) arise flowers, from धཾ (dhaṃ, seed syllable) arise incense, from दཾ (daṃ, seed syllable) arise lamps, from गཾ (gaṃ, seed syllable) arise scented water, from नཾ (naṃ, seed syllable) arise food, from शཾ (śaṃ, seed syllable) arise musical instruments, these offerings are pure and unobstructed, pervading the sky. oṃ vajra argham āḥ hūṃ. Similarly, do this for offerings such as शब्द (śabda), and finally accompany it with the vajra bell and great music. Jetsunma allows taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, and the Three Jewels (三宝,Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) as a simplified ritual. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
