In the center, visualize countless lamas, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas descending and abiding. Engage in harmony and repetition. I beseech all the lamas, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions to consider me. I, named so-and-so, from beginningless time until now, gather and combine all the roots of virtue arising from generosity, discipline, and meditation. Together with all sentient beings as vast as the sky, may I quickly attain the precious state of omniscience, the supreme meaning, the assembly of yoga, the adornment of the mind, and the excellent generosity. Until I attain that, may I be born among gods and humans in the happy realms and higher realms. Among them, may I be the best of the long-lived, the best of the healthy, and the best of those with great wealth, beautiful form, great splendor, and great power and riches. Having become so, may I be born at the feet of a virtuous and harmonious spiritual friend. May I hear the Dharma of the Great Vehicle from them. Having practiced their meaning, may I perfect all the grounds and paths and attain the Dharmakaya of unsurpassed enlightenment. May it be accomplished in that very way. Recite three times. This is the common dedication for the living and the dead. Now, the uncommon dedication, what needs to be done above and below, is: After speaking, all those requesting the dedication should join their palms. From the side of so-and-so, relying on the accumulation of special merit from previous lives, in the center of Jambudvipa (Earth), in a place where the sacred Dharma flourishes, a precious human body with leisure and endowment has been obtained, with a complete lineage and family, not becoming a burden to others, existing in the manner of human adornment. However, the Blessed One said that, in general, the characteristic of all conditioned phenomena is impermanence, and in particular, the life of a person is impermanent. That has befallen him, and he has passed away at an advanced age. However, this is not something that has never happened in the world; it has not gone beyond the characteristic of everything. As it is said in the vast play, the three realms of existence

Mothers are like impermanent autumn clouds, and the life of beings is like water flowing down a steep mountain. As it is said in the chapter on impermanence: Have you ever seen anyone who was born and did not die? Or have you heard of it or doubted it? Thus, for all who are born, the Lord of Death dwells before them, and since everything appears to be changing, there is no reason to grieve. Thus it is said. The end of birth is death, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion, and the end of prosperity is decline; there is nothing beyond these. Accumulated wealth cannot satiate, power and violence cannot protect, and the time will come when one must leave alone, abandoning all relatives and friends, like pulling a hair from butter. When these words fell upon him, it was said that it would be extremely beneficial for you all to do good deeds, give alms, and build stupas for his benefit. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Precious Daughter: When the time of death comes, no one will be a refuge, neither parents nor relatives, at that time only merit is the sole refuge. And as it is said in the Sutra Admonishing the King: When time compels the king to depart, enjoyment, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings dwell or go, karma follows them like a shadow. Thus it is said. Good and bad karma follow the deceased, and dedicating merit can enable the deceased, even if reborn in a lower realm, to quickly attain liberation. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: In the past, the venerable Katyayana went to the city of Stone Heap (possibly in present-day India) and advised a butcher to refrain from killing at night. The butcher also took the vow not to kill at night. Thereafter, after his death, due to his previous unwholesome karma, he was born in a temporary hell, suffering during the day and enjoying the pleasures of the gods at night. The venerable Rice-Shoot Born asked him why this was so, and he said: I suffer during the day because I killed during the day, and I am happy at night because I took vows. If you go to Jambudvipa, please advise all my sons to refrain from killing and dedicate the merit to me. Rice-Shoot Born did as he was asked, and the butcher's sons also listened to his advice. The venerable Katyayana dedicated the merit to his father, freeing him from temporary suffering and causing him to be reborn in the Thirty-.
