Difficult to endure. It is not good to go to a solitary place alone, since one's own suffering is of no benefit to others? This suggestion is from the heart, please listen respectfully. Abandon distractions and noise, and may you be well. Going to an empty, uninhabited place will reveal itself. This is a beneficial instruction, keep it in your heart. Firstly, to be virtuous, abandon attachment to one's own homeland. Secondly, to be virtuous, go to a secluded mountain retreat without bias. Thirdly, to be virtuous, cultivate diligence in enduring suffering. This is the key to grasping the meaning of reality. Advice to oneself, from the Vajra Song. The chapter on cutting off attachment and clinging, the fourth chapter. Again, seeing that there was no essence in anything at any time, he sang a song of striving for solitary practice. Ignorance is as vast as the sky, and the darkness of the night of grasping is extremely deep. Because the afflictions of not knowing are without beginning or end, I give you, the ignorant one, another piece of advice. Now, in this life, while seeking the path of liberation, you do not strive to practice, but are distracted by distractions and noise. What is the use of the illusory activities of this life? Now you should practice the meaning of essence. The pleasures of this life are like a dream, and are of no use whatsoever, and you must abandon them and leave. What is the use of food, wealth, and prosperity to me? Now you should practice the profound meaning of the Dharma. Meeting will eventually lead to separation, like guests in a shop. Mutual bondage, friendship, affection, and love, and many retinues, what use are they to me? Now you should practice the meaning of inseparable. Wonderful fame, praise, and honor are like a dream. Deceiving children with illusion, increasing discrimination. What use is the respect and service of others to me? Now you should practice the meaning of clear light. Whatever actions of this life, whatever they may be, are meaningless, and all are the cause of suffering. What use is illusory action to me? Now you should practice the meaning of non-action. Among all things, when one goes alone, nothing at all is of any help. What use is the appearance of this life to me? You should practice what is beneficial for death. No matter who is close, no matter what is obtained, no matter what there is, only good and evil follow. What use are relatives, friends, wealth, and many things? You should seek the supreme Dharma that is beneficial for death. There are countless joys and happiness in the external world, and the appearance of joy and happiness in body and mind.

Though vast, what use is it to me at the time of death? When body and consciousness separate, seek a certainty that is beneficial. Not fearing sickness, not regretting death, not regretting at the time of death, the profound essential Dharma. In the Dharma-nature sky of self-awareness's familiarity, seek to seize the stronghold of the meaning of reality. Again and again circling in rebirth, never having leisure, now in this life, having seized the ground of Dharma-nature, in the unchanging primordial space of Dharmakaya, seek to attain the state of self-aware Dharmakaya. Listen respectfully, for this advice comes from the heart. Strive to practice in solitude, and accomplishments will arise. Cherish the state of awareness, and certainty will be born. This is the quintessence of profound meaning, a condensed instruction. My mind is weary of distractions, therefore I am devoted to practicing peace in solitude. Therefore, this sequence of advice to oneself, I also offer to the ears of the fortunate ones. May this virtue make my mind a garden of peace, completely filled with the wealth of profound treasure qualities, a place where the ocean of dakinis and oath-bound ones gather, may it open the four precious doors of the hidden land. From the Vajra Song of Advice to Oneself, the fifth chapter: Encouraging Practice from the Heart. Thus ends. The Vajra Song of Advice to Oneself, spoken by the supreme vehicle yogi Longchen Rabjam, on the mountainside of Gangri Thökar (Mount Kailash), in the place of Orgyen Dzong (Ugyen Dzong), in the palace of Samantabhadra, a place shimmering with moon crystal. Auspicious. From "Legacy of the Ancestors," Collected Works of Longchen Rabjam, (24) Vajra Song of Advice to Oneself.
