Herein is the treatise called "Eleven Meanings." I prostrate with body, speech, and mind to the glorious Vajradhara, the lama, the yidam deity, and the dakinis who bestow bliss. Here, for the sake of a fortunate individual attaining enlightenment, the compassionate and skillful teacher, Samantabhadra, the perfectly complete Buddha, manifests from the luminous expanse of the Dharmakaya into the Sambhogakaya adorned with marks and signs, despite the diverse dispositions of beings to be tamed. There are eleven meanings: First, how does the ground, the nature of reality, abide before enlightenment and before sentient beings arise? Second, how does delusion arise from this abiding state? Third, even in delusion, how does the essence or seed of the perfectly complete Buddha reside within sentient beings? Fourth, where does this essence reside? Fifth, from where does the wisdom of this abiding state arise? Sixth, through which gate does it manifest? Seventh, where does it appear? Eighth, how to practice it? Ninth, how to measure the extent of experience? Tenth, if one dies without realization, how does the bardo of reality manifest? Eleventh, ultimate great liberation. The first of these generally follows the tenets of the Great Perfection, (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), and among the individuals who follow the path, (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), here, for those who follow the path, (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), it is determined by words: The initial ground abides in three aspects: essence, nature, and compassion. The essence is emptiness, the nature is clarity, and compassion is unceasing. The essence abides as the body གཞིའི་དུས་ན་ (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), the nature abides as speech, and compassion abides as mind. The essence abides as the body without ornaments, seat, or throne (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning), the nature blazes in various colors, and compassion abides as an unceasing manifestation, pervading all. The essence, being emptiness, does not fall into the extreme of permanence, and the nature, being clarity, does not fall into the extreme of nihilism. It pervades all.

From the perspective of essence, it does not fall into the side of materiality. Moreover, the essence does not remain in confusion. Compassion, Essence Primordial Purity Spontaneously Accomplished, cannot be confused with Nature Spontaneously Accomplished, Compassion All-Pervading. That is to say, the essence is the Dharmakaya, so it does not change; the nature is light, so it is naturally bright; compassion is wisdom, so the aspect of knowing does not cease, but manifests clearly and separately. Moreover, the aspect of knowing abides in the three wisdoms of the basic existence. This is the original state as it is in the beginning. Now is the second part, which explains how confusion arises from that: The essence, awareness-wisdom, as the cause of the basis of confusion, becomes the single ignorance. Nature, as the condition of confusion, causes the wind of propelling karma to rise, and it manifests as color on it, becoming co-emergent ignorance. Compassion, as the result of confusion, changes from the wisdom of quiescence to the ignorance of complete conceptualization. Now, awareness and non-awareness are like the front and back of the hand, because they are not understood, so it is confusion that depends on awareness or depends on the confusion of awareness. Upon that, discrimination arises as a collection of names: This is awareness-wisdom, this is non-awareness or confusion. Because names are not established, it becomes the ignorance of complete conceptualization. Upon that, grasping at objects and subjects, like the face of a person, as the cause of confusion, is called the causal condition, which is the three ignorances. Upon that, it is called the objective condition, which is the separate manifestation of objects, like a mirror. I, self, and various grasping and grasped objects, as the dominant condition, exist simultaneously, so it is called the simultaneous condition, which is the impure actual manifestation, like the nameless becoming named. In this way, because the essence is not understood and is confused, the places, actions, faculties, and immeasurable afflictions of beings arise. Now is the third part, which explains how, although confused now, sentient beings are pervaded by the Tathagatagarbha: In the body of one sentient being, there are five bodies, five families, five wisdoms, five winds, five knowledges, and five lights. Because the five aggregates of awareness-wisdom exist, the Tathagatagarbha pervades all beings. As it is said: One's own body is the Vajra Buddha, the Buddha resides in one's own body, and the Buddha cannot be shown from elsewhere. That is to say, awareness-wisdom itself, in various forms, on that object is awareness-wisdom.
