A Collection of Songs and Instructions from the Glorious Great Vidyadhara Tsewang Norbu. A Collection of Songs and Instructions from the Glorious Great Vidyadhara Tsewang Norbu. Homage! The collection of songs and instructions from the glorious great Vidyadhara Tsewang Norbu abides thus. ༈ A Song of Self-Admonishment ༈ Hey! You who are named the reincarnation Tsewang Norbu! Lazy and indolent one, come here and listen. Among you here, there are many who teach human ethics and Dharma, but the one who can speak of the excellent path of ultimate bliss, the teacher is only me in this degenerate age. Therefore, do not be distracted, but hold onto these words of advice. Always speaking jokes, this is not right. What can be said to a person without heart and who has lost the point? Alas! This leisure and endowment body is due to the residual karma of past accumulations. Not knowing its rarity, it is like a child finding a treasure. Although the arising of genuine recollection and the habitual tendencies are weak, if you do not act according to the Dharma, it is like a jewel sinking into the mud. Even if good karma ripens and you are interested in the Dharma, but you do not hit the key point, it is like a poor woman's gold bag. Even if you meet a qualified guru with good aspirations, but you do not know how to supplicate, it is like a black bee entering a lotus grove. Even if you know a little about faith and pure perception, but you do not have a firm foundation, it is like planting seeds in barren land. Even if you receive the kindness of the holy ones and receive instructions and transmissions, but you do not understand them as they are, it is like watching from afar. Even if you hear many profound, excellent, and pleasing teachings, but they do not benefit you, it is like pouring water on a stone. Even if you understand a little about cause and effect and vows, but they do not enter your heart, it is like leather that is stiff and greasy. Even if you rely on a qualified guru for a long time, but you do not understand the Dharma as it is, it is like a Mongol in a monastery. When you meet the supreme guru and have the opportunity to listen to the sacred Dharma, if you do not exert effort, it is like returning empty-handed from the Golden Isle. Even if you do a little virtuous work, but you are bound by your own desires, it is like good food mixed with poison. Even if you know that the eight worldly concerns are the prison of samsara, but you cannot abandon them, it is like being attached to the form of a rakshasi. Even if you remember impermanence and death for a moment, but you still cling to the appearances of this life, it is like knowingly drinking poison. Even if you know that it is easy to practice the Dharma, but it is not connected to your own mind-stream, it is like a vidyadhara losing a treasure. Even if you have the confidence to practice the sacred Dharma, but you postpone it to tomorrow, it is like hail falling during the harvest season. Even if you are eloquent, your words are sincere, and your Dharma talks are pleasing to the ear, but you have not experienced it yourself, it is like talking about medicine without medicine.

Speaking vows to others, But not practicing them yourself is like a parrot reciting Dharma. Even if strict laws are enacted, They are like the military laws of an arrogant and domineering official. Even supporting Sangha with the hope of benefit for oneself, It's mostly useless, like raising fledgling birds. Even patrons who support each other in accordance with Dharma, It's mostly like feeding monkeys, a futile waste of energy. Even relying on secret friends for support of channels and winds, It's mostly like worldly astrological conjunctions as companions. Even disciples who have vows, kinship, and learning, They are like stars in the daytime, rarely possessing true discipline. Spending a lifetime in village disputes, It's like the endless ripples of black water, never exhausting karma. Even when busy with worldly affairs, thinking of striving for Dharma, It's like the endless back and forth of a scale. Even holding the form of a Dharma practitioner without understanding Dharma, It's like wrapping impure things in beautiful silk. Even having a monastic seat and a reincarnation name without benefiting the teachings, It's like the quickly impermanent morning star. Even the noisy and chaotic temporary happiness of power, It's like a fleeting illusionary show. All these beautiful arrangements and activities, It's like a dream at the moment of waking, instantly vanishing. All these sweet and pleasant worldly teachings, It's like a temporary beautiful and endless market show. Even if teacher and students are noisy and happy for a while, It's like an impermanent and illusory Gandharva city. Even if soft clothes and delicious food bring temporary happiness, It's like the dew on a tree in the sunrise, not lasting forever. Those who lack qualities but pretend to be a Lama, It's like conjoined lambs falling off a cliff, failing to achieve both aims. Even if someone proclaims themselves a reincarnation without qualities, It's like a deceitful person wearing a leopard skin on a donkey. Those who have not accomplished their own benefit but boast of benefiting others, It's like a madman becoming the head of a community. Those with many different thoughts and no unity, It's like a blind man shooting arrows that never hit the target. Now, if we don't unify our understanding of Dharma, Life will be wasted, like dreaming of a kingdom. Alas! These thirty-eight similes, Are spoken out of sadness for one's own faults. Inner, outer, and secret changes of the times, Have you seen or heard them, Tshewang Norbu? The suffering of the six realms of samsara, birth and death, If remembering it makes your heart tremble, what is it like to experience it? Now it is imminent and quickly approaching, This cycle of rebirth again and again.
