Fourth, Mandala. Fourth, Mandala. Thus, it is not enough to merely purify adverse conditions and obscurations; it is also necessary to accumulate favorable conditions and merit, because on the path of the causal vehicle, one must first undergo countless eons of accumulation and purification before finally realizing the truth of the Dharma nature of the Path of Seeing. Similarly, here, in order to generate the special realization of the profound path in the continuum, both accumulation and purification must be complete. The method of purifying sins has already been discussed in the section on Vajrasattva. Regarding the accumulation of merit, although there are ocean-like practices of the Bodhisattva, here it refers to the two: the merit of tangible forms and the wisdom of intangible forms. The merit of tangible forms is the five aspects of skillful means from generosity to meditation. Wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom. Moreover, according to the new schools, the method by which these two accumulations obtain the two fruits, the tangible merit accumulation acts as the substantial cause, and the intangible wisdom accumulation acts as the cooperative condition, thereby obtaining the Form Body of the Buddha. The intangible wisdom accumulation acts as the substantial cause, and the tangible merit accumulation acts as the cooperative condition, ultimately obtaining the Dharma Body of the Buddha. According to the old schools, the Buddha, whose essence is primordially pure, fully possesses the qualities of the three bodies, and although it is complete without seeking, it will not manifest without relying on the conditions of the two accumulations of the path. For example, the orb of the sun in the sky has rays that are inherent, but it is obscured by clouds and cannot be seen, so wind is needed to dispel the clouds, but the wind, although it is the cause of dispelling the clouds, is not the fundamental cause of producing the sun. Similarly, without accumulating the two accumulations, one will not ultimately obtain the two bodies of fruition, but these two accumulations are not the fundamental cause of generating the two bodies, but merely the name of the cause is given to the condition. Therefore, from the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to the Great Perfect Enlightenment, all those fruits cannot be obtained without accumulating the two accumulations. However, all the methods of accumulating the two accumulations are not the same in every respect. The tangible merit accumulation of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is the practice of morality and meditation, and the intangible wisdom accumulation is the realization of the selflessness of the person and the gross selflessness of phenomena.

Do not misunderstand. They hold that what is grasped is partless atoms and that the grasping consciousness is partless moments, which in the ultimate sense, is not that reason cannot analyze, but that it is put aside because they dare not. If what is grasped is not partless atoms, then there is no cause for creating the container and its contents; if the grasping consciousness is not partless moments, then there is no basis for the cycle of karma and its results. Therefore, they assert that these are established. Bodhisattvas, with the accumulation of merit with appearance, the five perfections of the path of skillful means, and the accumulation of wisdom without appearance, the perfection of wisdom. Or, each of the giving etc., from the aspect of the appearance of skillful means, is the accumulation of merit with appearance; from the aspect of the emptiness of wisdom, it is called the accumulation of wisdom without appearance. Furthermore, for beginners, alternating between the two accumulations does not bring about union. After attaining the noble ground, the emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects manifests as the form of the six perfections, from the aspect of appearance it is merit, and from the aspect of emptiness, which is free from the grasping of the three spheres, it is the accumulation of wisdom. Then, are the two accumulations of the two Hearers and Solitary Realizers and the three Bodhisattvas the same? They are not the same, because the differences are very great in terms of the cause—intention, the practice—object and aspect, and the result—what is to be attained. All the yogas with signs of the outer three tantras are the accumulation of merit with appearance, and all the yogas without signs are the accumulation of wisdom without appearance. All the stages of generation of skillful means of the inner tantra Mahāyoga are the accumulation of merit with appearance, and the stage of completion of wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom without appearance. The partial stage of generation of Anuyoga, and all the actions and bonds of the trul khor focusing on the channels, winds, and bindus, and then arising as the deity body of illusion, these are the accumulation of merit with appearance. The wisdom drawn by the four joys arising from these skillful means is the accumulation of wisdom without appearance. In the Kadak Trekchö of Atiyoga, the accumulation of wisdom of the essence of emptiness and the wisdom of the nature of clarity are called the accumulation of merit, and there is no contradiction in naming them so. Or, the four spontaneously accomplished appearances are the accumulation of merit, and the Kadak Trekchö is the accumulation of wisdom. This is established by the cause of ultimately attaining the two bodies—major and minor. However, beginners practicing the two accumulations
