One should abandon the actions of one's own body, speech, and mind that are contrary to the (Guru's) mind. One should rely on the actions of body, speech, and mind that encompass the three aspects of this (Guru): body, speech, and mind. If one pleases the mind of this (Guru), one pleases the mind of the ocean of refuge (all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas). If one goes against the mind of this (Guru), it is like a severed head that cannot be restored. Because one goes against the mind of the ocean of refuge, one should abandon actions that displease (the Guru). Now, in this one lifetime, one must perfect this single practice of taking refuge. For a person, in one lifetime, there is either suffering or happiness; there will be no other result. Suffering has two aspects: the result of suffering and the cause of suffering. First, the result: being tormented by illness, possessed by demons, oppressed by negative influences, etc. When troubled by undesirable things, do not think, "I should not have such things happen to me." Instead, think, "This is also the kindness of the Three Jewels, a way for me to exhaust my bad karma." Originally, there was karma to be experienced in future lives, but now, through the kindness of the Three Jewels, I am experiencing and exhausting it now, so I am very happy! One should think and meditate in this way. When the cause of suffering arises, such as thoughts of the three poisons of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, one should also think, "This is also the kindness of the Three Jewels." Because "such latent afflictions exist in my being," the kindness of the Three Jewels allows them to be exposed. One should think in this way and be happy about it, considering it necessary and unavoidable. And think, "These unwholesome thoughts and actions have not arisen in my being because the kindness of you, the Three Jewels, has not diminished." One should cultivate joy in this way. If the cause and result of happiness arise. If the cause of happiness arises, such as faith, renunciation, bodhicitta, etc., Abu Lama said, "If a virtuous thought arises, cherish it." Therefore, one should strengthen that thought and make it grow more and more. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Just as in the darkness of a cloudy night, a flash of lightning briefly reveals everything, so too, by the power of the Buddhas, in the world, merit and wisdom occasionally arise." Like that, one should pray to the Lama and the Three Jewels to make such thoughts grow more and more. If the result of happiness arises, such as abundant and complete food, clothing, and resources, do not think, "I am a good son, a strong man, that's why I got it." That is the kindness of the Three Jewels.

Therefore, recognizing this, one should remember the kindness of the Three Jewels and strive to perform all offerings of gratitude. Even for the first offerings of food and drink, one should think of offering the first fruits at the place of offering. Later, however, people think of it as a place to worship the demon king, and no one, regardless of status or ability, thinks of it as a place to worship the Three Jewels. By placing the first fruits in the first offering, even a small offering to the supreme teacher, the precious Buddha, etc., can serve the purpose of not interrupting the continuous offerings. This is also repaying the kindness of the Three Jewels. Moreover, one should offer one's body and all possessions to the Three Jewels and dedicate wealth to the Dharma. Just as it is said: Rather than making efforts like a mountain, it is better to accumulate merit like a spark. Therefore, one must accumulate merit. The place to accumulate merit is the Sangha. The Kagyu school says: The Buddha Jewel is supreme, the Dharma Jewel is supreme, and the Sangha Jewel is supreme. Because one can obtain merit by offering to the Three Jewels, although one can obtain merit by offering to the Buddha and Dharma, one does not obtain the merit of acceptance, while offering to the Sangha obtains both the merit of offering and acceptance. In particular, if one offers to the Lama, it is offering to the Fourth Jewel, and therefore one can obtain immeasurable merit. Fourth, regarding benefits, there are two types: temporary benefits and ultimate benefits. The first is that in this life, one is protected from the eight and sixteen great fears, such as disease, evil spirits, the king's punishment, and famine, and one obtains all the happiness between humans and gods, which is the temporary benefit. Ultimately, by taking refuge in the Buddha, one obtains the state of Buddhahood as a result. By taking refuge in the Dharma, one can turn the wheel of Dharma three times. By taking refuge in the Sangha, one gathers the Sangha of Shravakas and Bodhisattvas, who are the tamed teacher, the tamed retinue, the peaceful teacher, the peaceful retinue, the near-peaceful teacher, and the near-peaceful retinue. First, Taking Refuge.
