First, Taking Refuge. First, Taking Refuge. Second, the common and uncommon, etc., are meaningful conduct among the four ways of gathering. Among the six, the first is the guidance of taking refuge as the foundation stone of all paths. "All paths" is a plural word, so what is it? Before all the paths of Sutra and Tantra, one must take refuge. As it is said: Although there are vows for all, there are none for those who have not taken refuge. Therefore, although all non-Buddhists can take a vow, without taking refuge as a starting point, there is no pure vow of virtue. Therefore, in order to rely on a wisdom that realizes the truth of the path and selflessness in the mind, one needs to rely on Samadhi. As it says: "By the superior insight endowed with perfect calm abiding, having known that it completely destroys the afflictions, one should first seek calm abiding, which is accomplished manifestly in a place without worldly attachments." Likewise, its basis must be to maintain pure moral discipline. If one needs to take vows, then without first taking refuge as a starting point, there is no way to request vows. The definition of taking refuge is: fearing the suffering of oneself and others in samsara, vowing to take a special object as refuge, and making a commitment. For example, it is like a child being chased by a dog and taking refuge in an adult. In particular, according to the Mahayana tradition, one takes refuge out of fear of the extremes of both existence and peace. First, taking refuge is what opens the door to all paths, and what opens the door to taking refuge is faith. If faith is divided, there are four types. First, for pleasing faith, there is no need to know the reason. An image of the Buddha, a Dharma text, and a Sangha member wearing red and yellow robes, even holding a square patch, are sufficient. For aspiring faith, one needs to know the faults of samsara, remember the benefits of liberation, and have the thought of wanting to attain it. For confident faith, it is the confidence in cause and effect. This is the knowing faith in the Buddha, the knowing faith in the Dharma, and the knowing faith in the Sangha, which requires knowing the reason. That is, one needs to know the qualities of the Three Jewels, such as the Teacher, the unsurpassed precious Buddha. In particular, confidence arises after knowing that the Three Jewels and especially the Lama are not deceptive. Like that.

Taking refuge through... is called a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels, as mentioned earlier in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge." Having all the vows, etc., means that one cannot restrain the mind with vows without first taking refuge. Without vows, one cannot keep moral discipline. Without keeping moral discipline, there is no way to accomplish all the Dharma of the path. Therefore, one must base oneself on the faith of trust or irreversible faith among these four types of faith. If one has faith oneself, there is no good or bad in the object, like the example of the old woman who attained Buddhahood after being bitten by a dog. The classification of refuge is the refuge of three types of persons, namely, three refuges. First, the difference in the intention of a small person is to take refuge in order to liberate oneself from the three lower realms and attain the state of gods and humans. The difference in time is temporary, for the duration of one's life, and ultimately until the state of gods and humans is not attained. The difference in the object is that the Buddha is the image of the Three Jewels, the Dharma is the stacked scriptures, and the Sangha does not need to be noble ones, but only ordinary Sangha who possess moral discipline, without needing to know too many reasons. Such a small person, an inner (Buddhist) small person takes refuge in the Three Jewels, and an outer small person does not take refuge, that is the difference. The intermediate person is the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha. They need to understand the reason, the difference in intention is that recognizing that the six realms of samsara are all suffering, and wanting to liberate oneself alone from them, that is the difference in intention. The time is temporarily for the duration of one's life, and ultimately until the state of Arhat is not attained. The difference in the object is that the Buddha is not a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or Arhat, and is not considered Nirvana that is complete in abandonment and realization and does not abide in the two extremes. Adorned with the wisdom of knowledge and the qualities of marks and signs, surpassing Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, is produced by the power of accumulating merit for three countless eons and being born into the lineage of a Chakravartin king. His body is not the object of refuge. The aggregates of ripening, the remainder of the truth of suffering, the impure nature, are produced from the seeds of the father King Shuddhodana and the mother Queen Maya.
