During the period of transcending karma, I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and after that, may I attain enlightenment. Having made this aspiration, the Tathagata Jewel Heart declared: 'Son of noble family, because you have generated the mind of compassion in order to liberate all sentient beings from suffering and afflictions, you are called Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Power. When you become a Bodhisattva, you will also perform the deeds of a Buddha.' After the Buddha Amitabha passes into Nirvana, after countless eons, when twice the number of sands of the Ganges have passed, in the twilight of the night, at the dawn when the sacred Dharma is disappearing, under the many adorned Bodhi trees, on the Vajra seat, you will attain unsurpassed enlightenment, and become the Tathagata Light Rays Shining from All Directions, the Glorious Accumulation King.' The duration of that time will be ninety-six billion trillion hundred billion eons.' Thus he spoke. Furthermore, in the Sutra called "The Noble Samadhi of Illusion-like," it says: Encouraged by the rays of light of the Tathagata Shakyamuni, when the great Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta came to this realm from the Pure Land of Sukhavati, they emanated various adornments and eighty-four kotis of tiered buildings, adorned with many supreme decorations. There, accompanied by retinues of so many Bodhisattvas, they went and prostrated at the feet of the Buddha, and praised him with verses. The Tathagata spoke to the Bodhisattva Padma Shri Garbha: 'Son of noble family, these two excellent beings have completely trained in roots of virtue from countless eons, have attained the Samadhi of Illusion-like, and show various miraculous powers. Look to the east and see what appears.' After he spoke thus, Padma Shri Garbha looked, and in the eastern Buddha fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, in the presence of so many Buddhas, so many Bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta were inquiring about their health and so on. When asked, "Is that so?" (the Buddha) replied: In immeasurable kalpas of the past, even more countless than the number of fine dust particles in hundreds of thousands of world realms, in a realm called "Accumulated Jewels, Constantly Showing Bliss," there appeared a Tathagata named "Golden Light Lion Play King." His Buddha-field possesses immeasurable qualities, and if shown only by example, the splendor of the present Sukhavati realm is like a drop of water taken with the tip of a hair split into a hundred parts; while the splendor of that Buddha's field is like the remaining mass of water in the great ocean. The praise of the qualities of that field cannot be exhausted even if spoken for kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. In that field, there is a lord of a thousand world realms named "Glorious Majesty Dharma King," who has a hundred billion sons, all of whom have entered into unsurpassed Bodhi. Together, they attended and served that Buddha for eighty-four thousand million years, and upheld the Dharma called "Immeasurable Mudra." At another time, while the king was meditating in a pleasure garden, from his left and right armpits emerged two beautiful and delightful sandalwood snake-heart lotuses, from which two boys manifested, named "Jewel Heart" and "Jewel Supreme." Upon seeing them, the king, through mutual questioning and answering, also attained the five superknowledges. The two boys, together with the king, went to where the Bhagavan Golden Light Lion Play King was, and prostrated. The two boys asked, "How should we make offerings to the Victorious One?" The Buddha praised and replied, "If you generate the mind of Bodhi, it will become a supreme offering." The two boys prayed, "From countless kalpas in the past, the beginning of which is imperceptible, we have acted for the benefit of sentient beings, and from now on, we will not generate afflicted minds or unwholesome minds, and we will purify all Buddha-fields like this Buddha-field." The Tathagata is Amitabha, the boy Ratna is Avalokiteshvara, and Ratna-citta is Mahasthamaprapta, who was the first to generate the mind of enlightenment. These two holy beings, who can fathom the sands of the Ganges, served Buddhas before that Tathagata, but those Buddhas were not like that; these two generated the mind of enlightenment until then. These two have donned inconceivable armor, possess immeasurable qualities, and the limits of their qualities cannot be fathomed. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, in this Pure Land of Sukhavati, in the world named "Treasures Fully Assembled," will attain Buddhahood and be named the Tathagata "Radiance Shining Everywhere, King of Glory." The splendor of his Buddha-field cannot be fully described even if the Tathagata were to explain it for as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges. The splendor of the Buddha-field of the previously mentioned Golden Light Lion Play King cannot even compare to a hundredth or a thousandth part of this field. The Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta, after the passing of the King of Glory and the decline of the Dharma, will attain Buddhahood in that field and be named the Tathagata "Virtue Abiding Utterly, King of Jewels Assembled." His field and Bodhisattvas will be just like that of the King of Glory. Those who hear the names of these two Buddhas will not turn back from unsurpassed enlightenment. Hearing the names of the past Buddha Golden Light Lion Play King and these two future Buddhas will not be reborn as women, will eliminate rebirth for forty billion kalpas, will not turn back from unsurpassed enlightenment, and will not be separated from seeing the Buddha, hearing the Dharma, and serving the Sangha. Even after changing lives, they will attain ordination, remember past lives, and attain unobstructed eloquence and dharani. Thus it was said. In the Holy Dharma White Lotus Sutra, the Bodhisattva Akshayamati asked the Bhagavan: "Why is Avalokiteshvara called 'Lord of Freedom'?" The Buddha replied: "Sentient beings, hundreds of thousands..."

成千上万众生，无论遭受何种痛苦，如堕入大火，被洪水冲走，为求珍宝而下海，被黑风吹到罗刹洲，被刽子手追杀，从山顶坠落，被铁链等束缚，以及药物、咒语、僵尸、鬼怪等带来的恐惧，遭遇凶猛野兽，遭受冰雹雷电袭击，被食肉罗刹等所害，无论遭遇何种恐惧和痛苦，只要听到观世音菩萨的名号，就能迅速从这些恐惧和惊慌中解脱。即使三千世界充满夜叉和罗刹，他们也无法以憎恨之心看待念诵观世音名号之人。即使为了隐藏，金刚大山从头顶压下，只要忆念观世音菩萨，连他的一根毫毛孔也无法损伤。同样，即使三千世界充满持武器的敌人，只要听到观世音的名号，就能从恐惧中解脱。无论谁被贪欲、嗔恨和愚痴所折磨，只要持诵他的名号，就能脱离这些烦恼。同样，在没有空闲、争斗、争论和死亡等非常困苦的时候，这位慈爱和伟大的慈悲之主是真正的保护者和助援。如果想要儿子或女儿，只要持诵他的名号，就能生出相貌端庄的男孩和女孩，并能增长善根。如果有人向恒河沙数六十二位佛陀顶礼并持诵名号，或者用衣服、食物等一切资具供养赡养这么多佛陀，与仅仅向观世音自在顶礼一次并念诵其名号所积的功德相比，二者相等，没有优劣之分。他的功德即使在百千万劫中也难以穷尽，因此，他的功德是不可估量的。观世音菩萨为了调伏众生，会示现从佛到凡夫的各种形象，并以此说法，为了所有众生。

Countless beings, whatever suffering they experience, such as falling into a great fire, being carried away by floods, venturing into the ocean for jewels, being driven by black winds to the island of Rakshasas, being pursued by executioners, falling from mountain peaks, being bound by iron chains, and the fears caused by medicines, mantras, zombies, ghosts, etc., encountering fierce wild animals, suffering from hailstorms and lightning, being harmed by flesh-eating Rakshasas, etc., whatever fears and sufferings they may encounter, as soon as they hear the name of Avalokiteśvara, they will quickly be liberated from those fears and terrors. Even if this three-thousandfold world is filled with yakshas and rakshasas, all of them will not dare to look with hatred at those who hold the name of Avalokiteśvara. Even if, for the sake of concealment, a great vajra mountain falls upon their heads, if they remember Avalokiteśvara, not even a pore of their hair can be harmed. Similarly, even if this three-thousandfold world is filled with enemies bearing weapons, as soon as they hear the name of Avalokiteśvara, they will be liberated from that fear. Whoever is tormented by desire, hatred, and ignorance, if they hold his name, they will be separated from those afflictions. Similarly, in times of great distress, such as when there is no leisure, fighting, arguing, or at the time of death, this lord of loving-kindness and great compassion is a true protector and helper. If one desires sons or daughters, if they hold his name, they will give birth to handsome boys and girls, and they will increase the roots of virtue. If someone prostrates to and holds the names of as many Buddhas as there are grains of sand in sixty-two Ganges Rivers, or offers clothes, food, and all necessities to support that many Buddhas, the merit of that is equal to the merit of simply prostrating once to Avalokiteśvara and holding his name, with no superiority or inferiority. His merit is not easily exhausted even in hundreds of millions of kalpas; therefore, his merit is immeasurable. Avalokiteśvara manifests various forms, from Buddha to ordinary beings, according to what is needed to tame beings, and teaches the Dharma accordingly, for all sentient beings.
