All vows that lead to transgression must have a basis. Therefore, if one relies on that, one will not achieve the goal, thus the thirteenth root downfall is explained. Also, when taking jewels, one must worship and please the ocean deities. If the deities are not pleased, desires will not be fulfilled. Similarly, when accomplishing the siddhis of secret mantra, one must please the wisdom nature of women. Therefore, if one despises and slanders her, one will not achieve the goal, thus the fourteenth root downfall is explained. For these reasons, the number is fixed at fourteen, and the order is also fixed in that way. There are two ways of falling into transgression: the limbs becoming the actual basis, and the divisions of the downfall. The first is "when three are present," and so on. The three are honoring, and so on. "Becoming a downfall" means becoming a complete downfall. Furthermore, there are two types of limbs: common limbs and uncommon limbs. The first is the limb of the basis, that is, a person who has received empowerment and has not degenerated, or even if degenerated, has restored it. As it is said, "From below, it should be understood that those who possess empowerment in common with these faults." The uncommon limbs are explained as seven, but are condensed into five: the limb of the object, the limb of intention, the limb of action, the limb of the ultimate, and the limb of the subsequent. The first is "when three are present," which is an example, but those with two qualities and specific individuals are also objects of downfall. However, there are heavier and lighter among them, which will be clear when the extent of confession is explained below. The limb of intention consists of motivation and recognition. Motivation is "the thought provoked by afflictions," such as intense anger and so on. Recognition is "knowing that as that," that is, recognizing the teacher. The limb of action is the action of body and speech, such as striking with the body and scolding with speech, whether done by oneself or instigated by others. The limb of the ultimate is "depriving of livelihood with weapons and so on," where "livelihood" means depriving of the sustenance of life, that is, killing the teacher, according to the Geshepas. The commentator's view is that depriving of the sustenance of life is a downfall.

Not only that, but depriving of the livelihood of enjoyment or the livelihood of happiness may also lead to downfall. The meaning is also clearly explained in the following sources. According to the later translation, the downfall is caused by displeasing (the guru). If understood in this way, then the guru's life force is the first livelihood, and displeasing him, depriving of both livelihoods, etc., may be a subtle difference in translation. The subsequent limb is understanding completely, etc. Not being confused means not being insane, etc. If any of these limbs are incomplete, it will become another offense. If other limbs gather, and the place is not the guru, but the guru's enemy or another sentient being, it will become a similar offense or another downfall. Even if other limbs gather, if the limb of intention—the motivation—is incomplete, it will become a misdeed. If the cognition is incomplete, for example, mistaking another person and killing the guru, etc., it will become a misdeed. Even if other limbs gather, if the limb of action is incomplete, it will become a gross offense, etc. Even if other limbs gather, if the ultimate limb is incomplete, it will become a gross offense. Even if other limbs gather, if any of the subsequent limbs are incomplete, it will become a gross offense with complete limbs. There are five categories of downfalls, among which the root downfall is connected to the word "if," which will be explained below. "Possessing these actions" refers to the intention motivated by afflictions, etc. "Separated from livelihood and exceeding the limit" refers to being separated from the guru's life force and three years passing without confession, according to three Geshes. This may refer to being separated from the livelihood of enjoyment or the livelihood of happiness and three years passing without confession. The reason why this is possible is explained above in the chapter on downfalls. There are other reasons as well. For example, in the Pratimoksha vows of the Hearers, killing a life will lead to a downfall, and not only that, but taking what is not given, etc., will also lead to a downfall. The above downfall is: if one confesses properly later, it will become a downfall, which is connected to the above. By confessing that root downfall properly, the root downfall is purified, and the previous downfall becomes a qualified downfall, just like from the generation stage to the actual body.

Skilled people, whether wealthy or poor, can be self-sufficient. Unskilled people, whether wealthy or poor, rely on others to be self-sufficient. Whichever of the two it is, there are two ways to be self-sufficient or the extent of atonement: accomplishing through material means and through scripture. The first has five types: the extent of atonement for falls, the extent of atonement for defeats, the extent of atonement for heavy transgressions, the extent of atonement for gross transgressions, and the extent of atonement for minor transgressions. The first has three, the extent of atonement arising from relying on a place possessing three conditions, such as "if the extent of atonement is," etc. These fire offerings, etc., can also be accomplished through any choice, not necessarily requiring all of them to be complete. *Rigpa* (wisdom) refers to the Hundred Syllable Mantra. *Dbang bskur ba* (initiation) refers to seven times. *Dkyil 'khor* (mandala) refers to a bouquet of flowers, not scattered. *Yongs su rdzogs pa* (complete) refers to any number being sufficient. *Yul* (place)
