When I attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, I will also liberate you forever from disease, and establish you in the ultimate achievement and happiness of nirvana beyond sorrow.' Thus he spoke. Having heard those words, those crowds of people and the king's ministers and retinue made offerings with flowers and so on, and prayed: 'You who do such difficult things, when you become enlightened, may we become your Shravaka disciples.' Thus they prayed. ༈ Again, in the past, the Blessed One himself was a king in the city of Varanasi, named Brahma-given, who ruled the kingdom according to Dharma, prosperous and happy, without disease, famine, or internal strife. That king also loved the Dharma, had great compassion, and dwelt in generosity. There, at a later time, a great famine occurred like an intermediate kalpa, and the people became like hungry ghosts and sought refuge in the king. The king measured all the food and drink in the treasury, and the experts calculated that everyone should be given one mouthful each day, and the king himself should be given two mouthfuls. There, a Brahmin who was not included in the calculation arrived. The king gave him one of his two mouthfuls, so that the king and all the people of the country ate only one mouthful each day. At that time, the lord of the gods thought, 'I should test this king who is doing such difficult things.' So he transformed himself into the guise of a Brahmin. When he came to the king, he asked the king to give him his only mouthful of food. The king completely gave up his life and gave the one mouthful to the Brahmin. Thus, from one day to six days he cut off food, but when he saw other people eating food, he was very happy. The lord of the gods, seeing the king doing such difficult things, revealed his form and said, 'Because there is such a protector of beings, beings have a protector.'

So, he gave away everything he owned, leaving only one garment, and thinking to give his own body, he cut open his body and threw the flesh where flies and other creatures were, and sat there, satisfying them with blood. She gave the knife, and the woman with form cut off her two breasts, which were like golden vases, gave them to her, and then went back to her own house. Her husband saw that her body and pearl necklace, etc., were covered with blood, and he stood up from his seat and asked, 'Why did you cut off your breasts?' She then told him what had happened, saying, 'It is appropriate to give food to that woman who is threatened by hunger.' Her husband also agreed. In this way, the wonders of the woman with form were talked about by the crowd. The husband thought, 'Since others cannot do such a donation as this one who was born like her, by the power of truth, may her breasts be restored to their former state.' As soon as he spoke, her breasts were restored to their former state. After that, the lord of the gods wanted to take this woman with form, whose giving was superior to all in the world, to the city of the gods and possess her himself, so he transformed himself into the form of an obvious Brahmin and went to the house of the woman with form in the guise of begging. She took good food, and the lord of the gods said, 'Since the fame of your giving away your breasts has spread throughout the world, what do you seek with such hardship as the position of the lord of the gods, etc.?' She said, 'I want unsurpassed enlightenment, by this true word, may I become a man.' As soon as she spoke, she became a male body, and the hundred-fold lord went back to his own abode. There, she was known as the Bodhisattva Woman with Form. When the king of that country died without a son, the ministers and others consulted and said, 'This young man with form has all the characteristics of a king, so we should consecrate him as king.' So, he became king. He ruled the whole land with dharma and justice, and made all beings happy.

The five hundred members of his own lama's retinue said, "You are very loving, so if someone comes to ask for your life, you will give it, won't you?" He replied, "The beggar bestows a special benefit on the giver, so why would I not be loving? I am loving." They said, "If you give like that, what do you want, such as dominion and a wheel-turning monarch?" He said, "I do not want the unstable happiness of samsara, but for the sake of liberating all sentient beings, I want unsurpassed enlightenment." They went away rejoicing. Once, that great being thought, "I have done things for the sake of beggars, now I will satisfy the animals with my own flesh and blood." So he took weapons, honey, and butter, and without telling his relatives, he went to the charnel ground at night, examined the piles of corpses, freed himself from attachment, and cut off all his limbs with sharp weapons, smeared them with honey and butter, let them drip, and let the ants and insects eat them. Then a fierce bird pecked out his eyes and said to him again, "Do you experience great suffering from having your eyes gouged out?" The Bodhisattva replied, "If I give my body to someone who does not need it, I will suffer. But if I give it to someone who needs it, why should I suffer? I experience great joy."
