The doctors said to the young prince's father, the king, "If you soak all the essence of the flesh of the shangshang bird in butter and give it to him, he will live." Although all the essence was collected, the flesh of the shangshang bird was not found for twelve years. The doctors instructed those who were doing the work, "Take a mirror and a bird and chase it to the seashore. There, plant a stake and place the mirror in front of the crow. When the crow sees its own image, thinking it is a crow, it will make a sound. When the shangshang bird hears the crow's sound, it will come to it, and that is the way to catch it." They did as they said and caught a shangshang bird. Not long after the world was formed, due to natural law, animals could also speak human language, so that shangshang bird said, "Where are you taking me?" Those people told what had happened. It said, "Release me, release me! I will tell you about the medicine and jewels that have the power of flesh." Those people said, "Let us see what your medicine is like." It said, "The water I have bathed in has the power of flesh, take it and use it. These are the jewels," although it indicated this, the king, fearing, abandoned the jewels, took the shangshang bird and offered it to the king, and told the story as it had happened. The king asked the shangshang bird, "O god, the water I have bathed in has the power to strengthen the flesh." Then, the king placed seven water vessels filled with good water there, until the bird bathed and rested, and immediately flew to the top of the house, fearless, and said, "For a while, I was a fool at first, and then these things happened. Then the king is a fool, in the middle of fools."

Those Pratyekabuddhas said, "O long-lived one, go to the village, seek a doctor, and you will recover." He said, "The dharma that many people dislike and find unpleasant, and the dharma common to all sentient beings, which is called death, if it comes and carries me away with illness, why should I go to the village?" They said, "Even so, as long as a virtuous person lives, they accumulate merit; the more merit they accumulate, the more they will rejoice in the heavens." Having encouraged him, he descended to the village and gradually arrived at the palace of King Sibi's Yang in the country. He said to the doctor, "Please tell me a medicine that can cure this disease." The doctor said, "O noble one, your disease is the same as that of the king's son. The essence of twelve years, all boiled with butter, is available. Go and beg for it. If you obtain it, you will live." At the gate of that royal palace, if beggars appeared, a bell would be hung to summon them. That Pratyekabuddha went to the palace gate and rang the bell. Then the prince said to his parents, "Father and Mother, there is a beggar. Please ask what he is begging for." The two said, "Child, we have accumulated materials for twelve years and made an essence by boiling them. Drink this, and then call the beggar inside and ask what he is begging for." He thought it was wonderful, auspicious, and fortunate. When he wanted to drink the butter, because he cherished the hope of the beggar in his heart, it struck the point, so he did not drink it, but said, "Father and Mother, do not call the beggar in yet." The king instructed the gatekeeper to let the beggar in, and the prince asked, "O noble one, what do you desire?" He explained in detail. The prince said, "O noble one, this essence is only suitable for you, not for me, please accept it." He took the bowl and, with a strong feeling of joy, poured the essence into it. That great being also, because the prince generated the mind to benefit all sentient beings,

Having heard the rumors that his five hundred ministers were each slandering the king, the king thought, 'What if I kill these people?' But with a compassionate mind, he did not kill them, but expelled them from the country and sent them to a desert island. They were in danger of thirst, but did not see water, and cried out. At that time, the Blessed One himself, having become a supreme bodhisattva elephant, saw them, filled his trunk with water, ran and rinsed the mouths of those ministers, had them ride on his back, and led them to a mountain valley, satisfying them with flowing water, fruits, and roots, and said: 'Beyond this mountain is the corpse of a chief elephant. Wash its intestines and stomach, fill it with water, collect roots and fruits, and fill it, and in that way you will cross this wilderness.' Having shown this, that elephant climbed that mountain, thinking, 'Just as I have shown the way to save these afflicted ones and given my life, may I, having become a buddha, liberate these ones from the wilderness of samsara.' Having said this, he jumped from the top of that mountain and died. When the ministers searched, they saw it and said: 'If the elephant who gave us life yesterday is this one, then if we put our hands on it, why wouldn't our hands fall to the ground?' At that time, the gods of the Pure Abode said: 'May the wish in the mind of this great being, for whose sake he gave his life, be completely fulfilled.' Then, they washed the intestines and stomach of that elephant, filled it with water, and took the roots and fruits. They made offerings to the corpse of that elephant, crossed the wilderness, and made the aspiration: 'May this great being liberate us from samsara when he becomes a buddha.' Formerly, in a past age, in the city of Varanasi, the Blessed One himself took birth as King Padma, benefiting all sentient beings.

Later, when the king went out for a walk, those patients gathered and said to the king, "Please save us from this disease and grant us life." The king generated compassion for them, and with tears streaming down his face, he said, "If I cannot pacify the suffering of others tormented by suffering, then what is the use of this life and the power of the kingdom?" He gave away all the great wealth, installed his eldest son as king, confessed his sins to relatives and people, praised the people of the palace and ministers with joyful songs, and comforted the suffering patients. He stayed in the eight-limbed vows, went to the top of the palace, scattered flowers and incense, etc., and faced east and prayed, "By the truth and the words of truth, seeing the extremely poor sentient beings tormented by disease, I give up my life, may I be born as a Rohita fish in this river-swallowing water." Having said this, he jumped from the top of the palace. At the moment he fell, he died and was born as a Rohita fish in the river-swallowing water. There, the gods proclaimed everywhere, "This Rohita fish born in the river-swallowing water is like nectar for those who have been tormented by serious diseases for a long time." As soon as they heard this news, people immediately took up weapons and tools and began to cut the flesh of that live fish. When the Bodhisattva was cutting his body in this way, he pervaded those sentient beings with love, and warm tears flowed down his face, thinking, "My flesh and blood can make these sentient beings happy, this is a good gain." In this way, for twelve years, he continued to give his flesh and blood.
