Thus look. Thus it is said. Moreover, by grasping untruth as truth and being subjected to suffering, one should know the faults and shortcomings of wandering in samsara. By meditating in this way, all the good and bad deluded appearances of the night's dreams can be grasped by mindfulness, and if there has been practice before, one will abide in the clear light. Even if one has no practice, by being accustomed to the unreal nature of the deluded appearances of the day, one will be able to grasp the dream state. As the root text says: Alas, when the dream state of the bardo arises for me, Having abandoned the carelessness of lying down like a corpse in delusion, With unscattered mindfulness, remain in the natural state, Grasp the dream state, Practice transformation and clear light, Without sleeping like an animal, Cherish the practice of mixing sleep and clear light. Thus, if one gains familiarity and stability, one will gain control over the transformation of dreams. Identifying the dream state is as follows: The scriptures say: When falling asleep in a state of delusion, Falling into a ravine or being carried away by water, Hailstorms falling or being burned by fire, Being carried away by wind or chased by waterfalls, Seeing frightening images, Or one's own body being tormented by weapons, etc., When intense deluded appearances arise, One should know that it is a dream. Without distraction, stabilize mindfulness in that state, Visualize one's own awareness as the yidam deity, Visualize Padmasambhava in the heart, Visualize the root lineage lama on the crown of the head, Appearance and emptiness are without destruction in the mind, Think that it is a deluded habitual pattern. It is said that whatever happiness, suffering, fear, or terror arises in dreams are all delusions of the dream state. Generate a strong intention, thinking that they are not truly real, and without distraction, in a state of stable mindfulness, visualize whatever yidam deity one prefers. Visualize Padmasambhava in its heart. Visualize whatever root lama one has on one's own crown of the head. The one who meditates, the appearances of the dream state, and the awareness of the one who experiences the dream state are all inseparable from appearance and emptiness. In reality, one's own mind has no birth, death, or destruction whatsoever. It is very important to have stable mindfulness that these are all deluded habitual patterns. If one can grasp it in this way, one can identify the delusion of the dream state. One is free from grasping at reality. The dream state appears as clear light. The bardo appears as the nature of reality. One gains control over one's own mind. The scriptures say: By this, fear subsides in its own place, The deluded dream state is grasped as clear light, If one does not grasp the dream state in this life, Then the bardo will be filled with fea rful sounds and lights.
