The Seven-Day Retreat of Chö Practice. The Seven-Day Retreat of Chö Practice. From the Profound Meaning of the Chö Instructions: The Seven-Day Retreat abides here. Dharmata, free from elaboration, Prajnaparamita, And the Queen of Royal Lands, who teaches them, And the supreme path, the extraordinary Chö realm of instructions, And the Wisdom Dakini Machik, I bow at her feet. Through the force of respectfully requesting the practice instructions, I pray for permission to write these words. May blessings and the heart essence, understanding the meaning of the words, And through the power of aspiration, may all beings become victorious. First, the individual who has properly received empowerment and introduction should practice the actual path. There are three aspects to this: explaining the general instructions, cultivating the practice instructions, and pointing out the oral instructions. Generally, it has been taught before, but here it is the practice instructions. In this, this Chö is the general distinction, the enhancement of realization, the subjugation of gods and demons, the arising of the two types of accomplishments, and the cutting of the dry rope in water. Therefore, if you sincerely wish to wander in the mountains and generate realization in your being, there is no way to avoid wandering in dangerous places and practicing Chö. Therefore, one should go with four distinctions: where to go is the distinction of the place, when to go is the distinction of the time, who goes is the distinction of the person, and what to practice after going is the distinction of the instructions. First, the place of Chö, such as charnel grounds and dwellings, must be frightening and hair-raising, causing fear and dread, and capable of generating doubt and conceptual thoughts. Without these, there is nothing to cut. Moreover, having gone to that place, do not oppose the gods and demons, do not seek excuses, and do not expect accomplishments and blessings. Relying on the frightening object of the terrifying place, the gods and demons, cutting off the conceptual thoughts of the inner fearer, this has already been explained in the previous general instructions. When to go is the distinction of time, generally, one goes when feeling fear and dread, feeling afraid and uneasy. In particular, one goes alone at night, without companions. One should be determined not to rely on anything, such as the moon or weapons. Who goes is the distinction of the person, having been made a suitable vessel by empowerment, having certainty in mind that whatever appears is mind through introduction, and having cut off the attachments of outer and inner through instructions, one should go. And first

Observe whether one can practice Chöd. If miraculous events occur in between, observe whether one treats them with equanimity. Finally, observe carefully whether one can embark on the path to Buddhahood, and so on. Therefore, the first point is that all those who cannot practice Chöd are due to the smallness of the heart essence of their practice. If one generates the heart essence and places it foremost, there is nothing one cannot do. For example, it is like the appearance of fearful sights such as water and cliffs in a dream; although they appear, they do not become real. Secondly, it is because one does not understand samsara and nirvana as mind. Therefore, one should know that all are manifestations of the mind's magical power. When the mind is free from truth and falsehood, there is nothing to fear. For example, it is like someone who has never seen a mask before being afraid of it, but becoming unafraid upon seeing it repeatedly. Thirdly, it is because one has not received profound instructions. Therefore, having received profound instructions, one should know that all phenomena encompassed by samsara, nirvana, and the six realms, although appearing in various forms, do not become real. For example, it is like the absence of a story of being kicked by a donkey or startled by a rabbit. Fourthly, it is because of a lack of perseverance. Therefore, if one generates perseverance and can give up body and life, there is nothing one cannot do. The accomplished ones of the past endured hardships for the sake of a single phrase of Dharma. In between, observing whether one treats miraculous events with equanimity means observing whether regret arises in the mind when obstacles and miraculous events occur. When sickness and suffering arise, observe whether one can utilize them on the path. When adverse conditions and cruelty arise, observe whether one can treat them with equanimity. Finally, observing whether one can embark on the path to Buddhahood means observing whether one can serve superiors and whether one can become a protector of subordinates. In between, observe whether one's own view and realization increase, and whether emptiness and compassion become allies. If one possesses these qualities, one can practice Chöd; if not, one cannot. One should not practice through competitive spirit or machismo, nor for the sake of profit, fame, or greed, nor for the sake of gain and honor, nor relying on arrogance and seniority. So, through what does one practice? Through the instructions of Chöd being definitively settled by words, through obtaining the recognition of the instructions, thereby settling samsara and nirvana, through seeing the nature of mind, thereby severing internal and external attachments, and through releasing the clinging to the body,
