In the impure state of samsara, it is referred to as sentient beings, and that realm is also called the lineage or realm, the Tathagatagarbha. When possessing both purity and impurity, it is referred to as a person who has entered the path, and from the aspect of the realm, it transforms into Dharma and Sangha. For example, merely transforming from the wisdom of the path of seeing is Sangha; from the aspect of the uninterrupted path, it is the path; from the aspect of possessing the distinguished path of liberation, it is the truth of cessation. In the state of the utterly pure Buddha, it is referred to as Sugata, etc., and that realm is also called Dharmakaya. If distinguished from the aspect of transformation, there are three: Bodhi, qualities, and activities. Therefore, from the internal distinctions, it is also said to be the seven vajra places. It is crucial to realize that all the meanings of the latter two wheels are included therein. So, how is the meaning of the first wheel, the selflessness of the person, included therein? The object to be purified, the agent of purification, and the result of purification of the inferior path are all included in the Suchness that possesses defilements. Therefore, the main subject matter of this treatise is the doctrine of the Tathagatagarbha, and it should be known that all the meanings of the three wheels are included therein. So, what is this essence? Generally, in all the scriptures, it is said to be the emptiness free from elaboration, the luminosity of the nature of mind, the Alaya-vijnana, and the Bodhisattva or sentient beings, these four aspects. And in this very text, the three self-natures of Dharmakaya, Suchness, and lineage, and the four common characteristics of non-conceptualization and meaning are explained. These are also statements made in consideration of the power and provisionality of the above-mentioned three states. So, from where are these explained, and by whom are they elucidated? Freedom from elaboration is the meaning of the middle wheel and above, and the noble Nagarjuna and his followers clarified it with many doors of scripture and reasoning. However, the basis of terms such as emptiness and nature, as explained in the Madhyamaka collections of reasoning, is the negation of existence attained by the power of intelligence, which is held by most Indian Prasangika and Svatantrika teachers. And the Tibetan Madhyamaka Svatantrika proponents strongly assert only the negation of existence. Such is the view.

Regarding emptiness, Lekden Zhap said that the essence of the Tathagata is the "fire of intellect," and Chandrakirti also acknowledged this in meaning. Vimuktisena and Simhabhadra considered that in the emptiness of non-affirmation, there are the bodies of lineage and essence. Yeshe Nyingpo also said that this is the Dharmakaya, so in meaning, they also considered it the heart essence. However, the negation of non-existence obtained through inferential cognition is said to be a great disease for Bodhisattvas, because it itself becomes a great bondage of concepts. Therefore, in the final turning of the wheel, it is also distinguished by entering into the meaning of non-conceptualization. The luminous nature of the mind is clearly stated in the middle and final turnings of the wheel and in the tantric scriptures. In the Uttaratantra, the Mahayanasutralamkara, Nagarjuna's Dharmadhatustava, the Cittavajrastava, and the Bodhicittavivarana, it is clearly and extensively explained that this is the heart essence. The statement that the alaya-vijnana is the Tathagatagarbha appears frequently in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Ratnagotravibhaga, the Srimaladevi Sutra, the Vajragiti, and so on, and the Mind-Only teachers acknowledge it literally. The statement that sentient beings are the heart essence is found in the Lamp Illuminating the Teachings, which says, "All sentient beings are the Tathagatagarbha." And in this very text, it says, "The realm is in three states, indicated by three names," and so on. Although the meanings spoken in this text will be explained in detail below, here is a brief mention: Because the Buddha's wisdom enters the assembly of sentient beings, the self-nature is stainless, and that is non-dual. Because the Buddha's lineage is similar to this, it is said that all beings have the heart essence of the Buddha. That is, because the Buddha's wisdom enters all sentient beings, that Buddha's wisdom that enters sentient beings is called the Tathagatagarbha. First, the nature of the mind is without temporary defilements, and this suchness exists without difference in the Buddha and all sentient beings, so it is also called the heart essence. Second, the aggregates and so on that sentient beings have, which are similar to the Buddha, are the Buddha's lineage, and lineage means very similar, therefore.
