Explaining the System of Logic. Explaining the System of Logic. Named "The Sun that Clearly Illuminates the Intent of the Seven Treatises Explaining the Difficult Points of Pramana, the Mirror for Viewing the Form of the Treasure of Reasoning, the Drum Sound Arising from the Benefit of Others through Correct Reasoning." I respectfully prostrate to the Lama and the supreme deity, the protector Manjushri! With the combination of the sword of wisdom and the bow and arrow, destroying all battlefields of ignorance and delusion, well establishing the kingship of correct view, may that supreme deity bless my mind! Bearing the burden of the stainless doctrine, on the crown of the arrogant proponents of wrong views, the great elephant skilled in abandoning pride, I respectfully bow to the founder of reasoning! A mere fraction of the rays of light of Samantabhadra, when it dawns in the minds of fortunate beings in Jambudvipa, is called Dharmakirti, I bow to that one who waves the banner of fame! Who spoke well of the inexhaustible treasure of reasoning, who opened it as it is with unobstructed wisdom, on this earth there is no one to match him, I respectfully prostrate to the venerable Sakyapa! The speech of the Lama Manjushri is a wish-fulfilling jewel, I pay homage to the victory banner of explanation and practice, and to the wonderful lineage that has appeared up to the omniscient Lama! Well establishing the teacher and the doctrine as valid, the treatises of Dignaga and Dharmakirti who vanquished opponents, through past practice and the power of the deity, without error, grasping the essential points as they are, following the one opened by Panchen, the Lama of beings, I also, with my own discernment, cut through the network of vines of Tibetan summaries, and bestow the profound definitive key instructions. Here, may the assembly of ocean-like protectors of the doctrine, accomplish the activity of pacifying outer and inner obstacles. May the gods who delight in the doctrine dance, scatter flowers, and speak auspicious words! Those who wish to attain the state of omniscience must be skilled in the five sciences, as it is said: If one does not strive in the five sciences, even the noble ones will not become omniscient, therefore, in order to subdue others, to take hold of others, and to know everything oneself, one should strive in this. Thus it is said.

Thus, among the five sciences, here, in explaining the system of logic, there are three meanings: determining the tenets of logic, how its tradition arose, and explaining the particularly excellent system. Firstly, it is said that initially, the Arhat Choskyob (Dharmapala) composed the treatise "The Door of Speech." After that, the teacher Vasubandhu composed "Establishing Arguments." If you ask: In the Pramanasutra, it is said, "Establishing arguments is not by a teacher, it is definitely known to be without essence." Is this not what is said? The answer is: This was composed when he previously resided in the Vaibhashika school and when his intellectual capacity was not complete. Later, when he resided in the Chittamatra school and his intellectual capacity was complete, he did not accept the meaning of what he said himself, as explained in the commentary. The teacher Vasubandhu had four disciples who were more learned than himself. Among them, Dharmakirti, who was famous for being more learned than himself in epistemology, initially composed one hundred and eight scattered treatises, such as "Examination of Objects." Among those translated into Tibetan, there are also: "Differentiation of Winds" with commentary, "Examination of Objects" with commentary, "Examination of the Three Times," "Entering Reasoning," and "The Wheel of Nine Reasons." Later, he gathered the subjects of these into one, composing the "Collected Compendium of Valid Cognition," which consists of six chapters: Direct Perception, Inference for Oneself, Inference for Others, Examination of Examples and Pseudo-Examples, Examination of Exclusion of Others, and Examination of Contradiction. This was prophesied by the Lord Manjushri to become the single eye of all treatises in later times. Among those for which commentaries have not appeared, Dharmakirti, who heard the system of Dignaga from the teacher Ishvarasena, and who possessed the illusory qualities of all goodness, composed the "Pramana-varttika" in four chapters, with his own commentary of twenty-five thousand stanzas for the first chapter, as well as the "Nyaya-bindu" with his own commentary, the "Hetu-bindu," the "Sambandha-pariksha" with his own commentary, the "Santanantara-siddhi," and the "Vadanyaya," which are the seven treatises. Here, the early Tibetans considered the first three as the main body, and the later
