Explanation of the Established as Pramāṇa Explanation of the Established as Pramāṇa Secondly, there are three: Explanation of the established as becoming pramāṇa, explanation of its three means of proof, explanation of the necessity of praising with pramāṇa. Firstly, there are two: Showing the Bhagavan as the person of pramāṇa, explaining the necessity of mentioning "becoming". Firstly, there are three: Showing the pramāṇa arising from the sūtras, refuting the contradiction between one's own system and others, applying it to the meaning of the occasion. Firstly, there are three: Explaining the definition along with its meaning, refuting the three faults of the general definition, explaining the ascertainment on the basis of the subject. Firstly, if in the praise of the sūtra, the Bhagavan is praised through the gate of pramāṇa, then what is the nature of pramāṇa? By what is it established as pramāṇa? Here, the nature of pramāṇa is knowledge that is not deceptive. That which is not deceptive also has three distinctions: In what does it not deceive? It does not deceive in the object of acceptance and rejection. What does not deceive? The mind that measures how things exist according to the valid knowledge does not deceive. How does it not deceive? Because it exists with its own characteristics, it does not deceive when it engages in the ability to perform its function. Because it does not have its own characteristics, it does not deceive when it turns away because it is empty of the ability to perform its function. The Sakya's explanation is not common with others. Secondly, there are three: Refuting the faults of non-pervasion, over-pervasion, and impossibility. Firstly, the definition of pramāṇa, "non-deceptive," has the fault of non-pervasion, because there is no non-deception in the pramāṇa arising from sound. If it is asked: What is meant by "arising from sound"? Does it mean understanding the intention of motivation from the expressive sound, or does it mean understanding the meaning of what is to be expressed? If it is like the former, then that which arises from such a sound is also a dharma, it is non-deceptive, because it shows the speaker's manifest intention to express as the object of engagement. That which clearly shows the speaker's action, that is, the intention to express that appears clearly in the mind, such as the meaning of a pot that has become the object of the mind of intention to express, in establishing that, the sound of the pot that is separated from the five states is a dharma, it is pramāṇa, it is the very thing that can be a sign, because it is complete with the three aspects. Therefore, the mind that relies on it does not deceive in the object of engagement, therefore it is pramāṇa. If it is like the latter, then the sound itself is a dharma, the gate that arises from what is to be expressed that is held by oneself.

From then on, the realization of one's own object of attachment is not valid, because it is the cause of the meaning of one's own object of attachment, i.e., not the result. Secondly, the definition of validity, "non-deception," has the fault of being too pervasive, because conventional wisdom is non-deceptive. If asked, like the conceptualization of the general characteristics of a vase, etc., led by the direct perception of grasping a vase, such conventional knowledge is the subject. It is not desired that it is non-deceptive with respect to the vase, because it grasps by adding to the vase already grasped by the direct perception of grasping the vase that leads it. Thirdly, the Vaibhashikas say, the definition of validity, "knowledge," has the fault of being impossible, because it is impossible on the basis of the definition of validity, the sense faculty with form. If asked, the wisdom that understands the object to be measured is validity itself, but the sense faculty with form, etc., are not valid, because the result of validity has two kinds: the result of determination and the result of offering. From the first, when one engages in acceptance and rejection after separately knowing the meaning of objects to be accepted and rejected, wisdom is the main thing, but the sense faculty, etc., are not. And if there is knowledge with the aspect of one's own object to be measured, then there is the second result, the understanding of meaning. If not, even if there are sense faculties, etc., they are useless. The latter reason is established, because the wisdom with the aspect of the object, just by being different, establishes the term for the understanding of meaning of wisdom as different. Thirdly, then, how are the two definitions, "non-deception" and "knowledge," determined on the basis of the definition of validity? The commonly designated validity is the subject. From self-awareness, it understands the meaning of being knowledge of one's own nature, because the direct perception of self-experience and self-awareness is able to lead to the certainty that it is knowledge of oneself. This shows that all commonly designated validity is self-aware in the part of the definition, the part of knowledge, and the direct perception of self-awareness is self-aware in the part of the definition, the part of non-deception, which is shown through meaning, because the certainty about the object of entry is led by its own power, and the certainty about the part of non-deception on that is led by its own power, the two key points are the same. Then, since it is not different from knowledge, can it also lead to the certainty of non-deception by its own power? The commonly designated validity is the subject. Certainty is from the subsequent knowledge of certainty after the designation of wisdom...
