Introducing from the Perspective of Appearance. Introducing from the Perspective of Appearance. Secondly, introducing from the perspective of appearance: appearance is mind, mind is emptiness, emptiness is spontaneous presence, and spontaneous presence is natural liberation. The first of these is: Again, do the preliminaries as before, without forgetting them. Focus your eyes and mind on one object that is clear before your eyes, and look at it without distraction. At first, the appearance of the object itself will appear. Then you don't want to look. Then your eyes will blink. At that time, see if the object that appears in your eyes is separate from your own mind. When you look, the support of the eye is the object of sight, but if you say that the mind that sees is inside, then where is the mind, outside, inside, or in between? Which is the object and which is the mind? Now the mind is still not grasping the object, so let the mind look at how the object appears, its color and shape. If you say that appearance exists in the mind, then to further test whether you are sure, you should ask: Did the object go into the mind, or did the mind go into the object? Furthermore, if we take the four elements as an example, do the four elements turn around and say, "I am the four elements"? But the mind thinks, "The four elements," and then thinks, "It is the four elements," etc. Observe well. Similarly, for sound, smell, taste, and touch, focus your mind on them in turn, and observe and analyze them as above, and then ask. If you say that apart from the object, the mind of the viewer has no color, shape, etc., then that is the meaning of the inseparability of appearance and mind, and because experience is established based on one-pointed focus, it should be known that this is realization from the instructions and blessings of the holy lama, and it is very fortunate, and this mind only appears in the deceptive appearance of the object, etc., and there is nothing else. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: The mind disturbed by habits appears in meaning. It is not real, it is the nature of mind itself. Seeing things outside is wrong. And as it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra: O sons of the Buddhas, these three realms are only mind. And as Birwapa said: All phenomena are mind, appearance is an image. And as it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: A red-hot iron ground.

Who made them? Where did those fires come from? Thus, all of these, the Buddha said, are sinful minds. Like that and so on, practice as it is said in the immeasurable and valid scriptures! Twenty-fifth teaching session, the forty-first object of focus. Again, draw the mind inward and ask whether the body and mind dwell separately or as one. If you say they are separate, do the body and mind dwell like a house and a person, or like a body and clothes? In either case, when something like a thorn pierces anywhere from the head to the sole of the foot, which feels the heat, the body or the mind? If the body feels it, then the tongue should also be able to feel it, but it does not. If the mind feels it, then the body and mind are separate, and since the mind feels the pain in the body, then when cutting down trees or digging the earth outside, the mind should also feel pain. Moreover, if it is said that appearances dwell in the mind, then if distant appearances dwell in the mind, how is it possible that the nearby body does not dwell in the mind? Therefore, either both the body and appearances are the mind, or neither are, and there is no other possibility. So, examine it well again. If the body and mind are one, then when the body is born and dies, the mind should also be born and die. When the body changes, the mind should also change, and when the mind changes, the body should also change, and when the body is burned by fire, the mind should also be burned by fire, and so on. Aren't there these faults? Therefore, generate diligence, meditate, examine well, and not just understand, but make sure that the experience is definitely integrated into your being, cut off the superimpositions well, and then bring back the answer! Again, when asked, the heat from a thorn piercing the body, and the appearance of the body as something that is born and dies, and so on, are all appearances caused by not realizing that appearances and mind are inseparable and by not untying the knot of grasping and being grasped. But in reality, there is nothing that truly exists apart from the appearances of one's own mind. The corpse at the time of death is also the mind's appearance of those who see it, and it does not exist separately from that. If you say that, now have you understood? Determine that all grasping and being grasped is your own mind, and recognize all the deluded thoughts of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral, and place them in a state of being without foundation or root! Twenty-sixth teaching session, the forty-second object of focus. Thus,
