119 119 Therefore, if we want to know what the essence of this Kagyu Dharma is, how should we extract its core? Lord Gampopa himself said: In general, if you know that the essence of self-awareness is nothing at all, then there is nothing better than staying in that state. Even if subtle thoughts arise, do not look at them. By looking at it itself, it will return. There is nothing better than the essence of mind being nothing at all. Consider which is better: a non-conceptual samadhi that is as vast as the sky, or remaining in the state of awareness without distraction. That non-conceptual state, being like an unpredicted one, will not accomplish anything. Therefore, ordinary awareness is better. Or, if the entire realm of space is filled with gods and goddesses, and they lift me up, and I see myself as inseparable from them. Even if it appears that way, it is still a changing illusion of the mind. Therefore, ordinary awareness is even better. Or, even if you visualize yourself as a Buddha, adorned with marks and signs, appearing as clear as a rainbow, that is still the generation stage created through learning. Therefore, ordinary awareness is even better. Or, like the Kadampas, both the apprehended and the apprehender have no basis, so they are made unborn. Even if all phenomena become like the center of a completely pure sky, that is still a conceptual knowledge, a emptiness that has lost its nature. Therefore, ordinary awareness is even better. Regarding the experience of ordinary awareness, it is said in the tantras: "The co-emergent wisdom that cannot be expressed by others, cannot be found anywhere, is known through relying on the master's skillful means and one's own merit." This means that whether it is the innate Buddha-nature mind, ordinary awareness, or the adventitious defilements, the awareness of the eight consciousnesses, whether it is awareness with or without obscurations, its essence is nothing at all. Such self-awareness, in the relative truth, the false appears as the true relative truth, or the relative truth itself, because it is not truly established, becomes false. Therefore, in the ultimate truth, it is called selflessness. These two truths must be understood as not being established anywhere, just as falsehood is like falsehood, and truth is like truth. In short, if it becomes a Dharma that is established on a basis, then it must be established on a basis in either truth or falsehood. If it is not established on a basis anywhere, then

Thus, all speech, thought, expression, and conceptualization regarding "the basis is established" are completely pacified. If the basis is not established in either truth or falsehood, and if one thinks that the unestablished basis is established as the basis of wisdom, that is also not reasonable. Because the unestablished is never established, it will not become a basis; the established is never unestablished. So, is the unestablished basis established or unestablished? If the former, then the unestablished basis should not be established, because it is itself an established basis. If the latter, then it should not be unestablished, because the basis is unestablished. If the basis is said to refer to essence and cause, then the essence and cause of the established and unestablished are no different from the definition of established and unestablished. If they were different, then the essence and cause of the established and unestablished would also not be established. Because the essence and cause of the established and unestablished are no different from the essence of the established itself. At that time, if the basis of the established and unestablished cannot be found apart from the established and unestablished, then when one abides equally in that state of being free from seeing and what is seen, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana will be completely liberated from the elaborations of their own nature. When one is liberated from elaborations, all phenomena such as obscurations that depend on elaborations, and all arising and ceasing of conditioned phenomena of relative truth, will also not remain, but will attain perfect nirvana without residue. All phenomena from form to omniscient wisdom will be completely and perfectly awakened in every way. For deluded beings, there is no method of awakening more excellent than this. Such a principle cannot be made into an object of seeing, touching, or knowing by transforming it with conceptualization that mixes sound and meaning, or with the experience of mind's non-conceptual awareness, but rather it is directly seen in a way of not seeing, thereby understanding it. Even so, if there is still a lingering taste of subtle conceptualization analyzed by conceptual and non-conceptual thought, like the quick result of a seed burned by fire, it will immediately increase the experience and the real characteristics of the experience of shamatha-vipashyana yoga. However, it is precisely by relying on that, that all the seeds of various elaborative characteristics, and all the arising of the continuum of elaborations produced by them, will be completely cut off. Therefore, the elaborative characteristics of
