113 113 Furthermore, as stated in the replies of Lord Gampopa and Der-shek Khampa Dorje Gyal's disciple, I shall now relate. In that reply, it is mentioned: After Phagmo Drupa relied on many lamas and practiced all the teachings, he later debated with Lord Gampopa. Lord Gampopa repeatedly said, "Those of yours are also conceptualizations; those are also with conceptualization." Phagmo Drupa asked, "Then, what is Mahamudra like?" Khamton precisely said, "Mahamudra does not touch the realm of external conceptualizations, the inner awareness does not sink into dullness, the wisdom does not cling to the realms of samsara and nirvana, and the self-nature of awareness-emptiness is completely severed." Phagmo Drupa realized that, for the Dharma, there is no expression of "this is" or "this is not," and therefore could not stand up. The Lama said, "Stand up." Phagmo Drupa asked, "Then, what were all the previous Lamas?" Lord Gampopa said, "Mahamudra is beyond the mind, which is what the Prajnaparamita Sutra says, 'inexpressible, inconceivable.' That is what awakens ordinary awareness in the heart center. That is also without clinging to the ultimate meaning. The self-nature of awareness merges into meditation, so there is no need to rely on mindfulness. Meditation does not need to be meditated upon by clinging outwards; meditation itself actively inspires." Therefore, Phagmo Drupa said, "The sky has no boundaries, the blanket has no beginning or end, and tying the shoelaces completes the journey. For the yogi beyond the mind, that is the result. The root of virtue without remaining thoughts is called the realization of Mahamudra. When one's own mind becomes free, one can benefit others. Now there is no point in me going to Kham." The meaning of this passage is: The Mahamudra mentioned here refers to the wisdom that is free from the obscurations of afflictions. Even in mere terminology, it does not refer to the deluded phenomena that have not entered the state of mind, that is, the mind of conceptual thought itself, and the imputed phenomena established by conceptualizing its appearances. All imposed conceptualizations are not the wisdom of Mahamudra, because the primordial mind, that is, ordinary awareness, cannot be established and changed by the imposer through thought.

Since it is the unconditioned nature, free from the activity of being labeled, therefore, all that is labeled as defiled and completely purified dharma by conceptualization, the cause of samsara and nirvana, is like an illusion, not established as self-evident even conventionally, it is an artificial, deceptive dharma. The wisdom that is free from that conceptualization is free from all artificial deception, unconditioned, non-deceptive, non-false, free from the elaboration of true dharma, that is the wisdom of Mahamudra. Such wisdom is not a consciousness with an engagement that lacks self-mastery over objects that look outward, like the object and subject of conceptualization, nor is it under the power of the stupor of ignorance that has not become the wisdom of awareness in its own essence and nature as an object that looks inward. Since this itself is not established as the nature of delusion, it is not stuck in the womb of samsara. Thus, by removing the bondage of delusion, since this delusion-free state, free from delusion, is not established anywhere in terms of objects and non-objects, it is not stuck in the womb of nirvana either. From the perspective of the subject, although it is not appropriate to say that existence, non-existence, etc., are known in this way in terms of elaborations, it is the omniscient wisdom that engages in the three times without hesitation that it is not understood in this way, and the stream of awareness is inconceivable without momentary coming and going. From the perspective of dharmata, emptiness, non-emptiness, etc., cannot be established as a basis, it is free from rootless statements and thoughts. The others are easy to understand. Again, when asked whether there is a difference between Mahamudra and coemergent union, Mahamudra is the dharma of samsara and nirvana, spontaneously accomplished from the beginning. Dharmata, like the sky, is the non-dual one wisdom of all times, that is, it is uninterrupted. Coemergent union is the conceptualization that arises, it is joined to the four kayas, so it does not want to be permanent at all times, that is, there is interruption, he said. Then, when asked how much difference there is between experience and realization, experience is not beyond the part of the mind. For example, it is like the sun in the gaps of clouds. Bliss, clarity, and non-thought occur in a state of being high and low in turn. If you protect it without being attached to it, the defilement of the mind will be purified and realization will arise, he said. Then, when asked what the difference is with the path of seeing,
