111 It was also said that when asking Geshe Gonpawa for instructions, Geshe Gonpawa said: If you ask me for meditation, let go of all the teachings of learning and meditation from the past as if washing away dust. If the mind is not inverted and goes towards the cause of liberation, even if one verbally says that they are practicing my teachings, they will not go on the path of Dharma. If the guru's instructions become the key point, there will be a situation where sects and conceptual thoughts are not mixed. Then I will teach you meditation. First, focus your mind on one bindu and meditate, as he said, and then he meditated. When the Gya (rgya) patron meditated, because the mind did not grasp wisdom, he asked similar Geshes for similar methods, which was somewhat helpful in grasping the mind. Again, he said to Gonpawa: I wonder if I can ask other Geshes for some more methods? Gonpawa said: There is no need to ask others for any methods, listen to me and meditate. After nine months, he began to meditate, and the patron again said to Geshe Gonpawa: I feel a little bit of grasp in my heart. Gonpawa said: Your meditation is like inserting a spear into a mouse hole. Now stay, your view and meditation will be like waving a spear in the sky. Now, even if you ask others for some Dharma or look at some Dharma, it will be beneficial. In short, meditate on my Dharma without mixing it with others. After that, he did not want to listen to Dharma, nor did he want to read books, and focused his mind on meditation alone. Later, he merged into samadhi. Now, without the effort of meditation, I can enter samadhi, he said. Gonpawa said: Now the view and meditation are like waving a spear in the sky. After that, the master patron said to Gonpawa: The Dharma that you, the master, have taught, you practice secretly, and the Dharma that you want to teach to others, do you learn from other Geshes and then teach? Gonpawa said: If there are two kinds of water, clean and unclean, in one place, they will mix together. Do not listen to other people's Dharma, nor teach it, just do meditation. After saying this, he only practiced, and later it seemed that immeasurable qualities arose, but he did not proclaim them. Therefore, Jowo (jo bo, Venerable) Kadampas also guide in this way.

Furthermore, our Guru Milarepa's tradition also states that one should not mix in impurities from other teachings. One should practice oneself and only teach others what one has practiced. Mixing in too many things will make people feel untrustworthy, and there will be no blessings. The meaning of this is that after meeting a guiding guru who has good karmic connections from previous lives and is recognized as the embodiment of all Buddhas, one should follow his teachings and uphold his tradition without any doubt or hesitation. Just as a virtuous son inherits a good lineage and maintains good habits, happiness and well-being will arise. Following that holy guru, one should also maintain neutrality in a way that promotes strengths and avoids weaknesses with regard to the teachings previously received from other Kagyu gurus. The previous teachings should also be integrated into the teachings of that holy guru and practiced accordingly. What method should we use to tame our own mind-stream? Only the great guru who possesses compassion that has exhausted all defilements and has the Dharma-eye that is proficient in benefiting others knows. If one tries to control one's own mind-stream, it is like groping in the dark, and one can only find a few things. Therefore, when Dromtönpa met Atiśa, he devoted himself to following Atiśa's teachings, as if he had gathered the blessings of all gurus, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. When Phagmo Drupa met Gampopa, he integrated the countless Dharma practices he had previously practiced into Gampopa's ocean-like teachings and practiced them, thereby receiving the blessings of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the ten directions and becoming the great leader of the Dagpo Kagyu lineage. When the yogi glorious protector Virupa imparted the Lamdre (Path with its Result) teachings to others, he also explained them under the blessings of the glorious Naropa's teachings, thereby maturing and liberating the minds of his disciples. This is like feeding a lion cub with elephant's milk mixed with the nectar of the gods. Therefore, the Dagpo Kagyu's symbolic head ornament—the Dharma hat adorned with streamers—is worn on the head.
