106 106 Furthermore, when realization arises, is it better to block the six consciousnesses and prevent them from engaging inwardly, or is it better not to block the six consciousnesses and let them rest naturally without grasping? When asked which of the two is better, it was said: Gathering inward into the alaya and letting it be without conceptualization is not correct, because this kind of meditation is also practiced by non-Buddhists and Shravakas. Letting the six consciousnesses rest naturally without grasping accomplishes all the benefits for oneself and others. The meaning of this is: The absorption that blocks the six consciousnesses and thus prevents feelings and thoughts is a state of unconscious absorption that exists even in the traditions of non-Buddhists. Moreover, the cessation absorption that blocks the six consciousnesses can also occur in the minds of Shravaka Aryas. Different from that, without stopping the appearance of objects of the six consciousnesses, without abandoning the conventional truth of things as they are, and from this very basis, placing the nature of these things, the non-elaborate ultimate truth, in equanimity, then all the delusions of the false conceptualizations of inherent conventionality are purified. From the interdependent arising of illusion-like conventionality, which is not tainted by delusion, all the qualities of Buddhahood are accomplished. If one is attached to the bliss of the samadhi of cessation and absorption, and is solely focused on that, without completely eliminating the deluded aspects that obscure conventional knowledge, and without extensively training in the vastness of non-deluded appearances, then one will not attain the state of omniscience. Furthermore, there are other things to be learned from this explanation. As the great Sakya Pandita also said: Fools who meditate on the Great Seal, Are mostly born in the realm of animals. Or are born in the formless realms, Or fall into the cessation of Shravakas. Although he asserted that all the view and practice of the Great Seal of the Kagyu lineage have gone astray, in order to cut off this straying, one must have a realization that does not stray into this straying, and be skilled in the manner of whether one has strayed or not. Otherwise, for those who do not take on the burden of seeking this realization, no matter how much they superficially talk about this, how can they properly determine the extent of the vision that sees whether one has gone astray or not? Think well about it! Whether the view and practice of the Great Seal have gone astray or not, only someone who truly desires the state of the Great Seal from the bottom of their heart and practices the Great Seal can truly understand the reason for whether one has gone astray or not.

Therefore, if one can understand this, those who place the practice of Mahamudra in a state of equanimity, even if they verbally express how excellent the view, meditation, conduct, and result of Mahamudra are, it is very difficult to have an unerring conviction drawn from the measure of one's own experience as to whether or not they have actually attained realization. Furthermore, the Venerable One said: The path of abandoning the ground is the Paramitas, which is to abandon by considering what is to be abandoned and the antidote as different. The path of transforming the ground is mantra, which is to transform the support into the deity's body and the male and female powers, vajra (藏文:རྡོ་རྗེ།,梵文天城体:वज्र,梵文罗马拟音:vajra,汉语字面意思:diamond scepter) and lotus (藏文:པདྨ།,梵文天城体:पद्म,梵文罗马拟音:padma,汉语字面意思:lotus), and to transform the dependent afflictions into wisdom, which is to wash away impurities with impurities, and to cut off thoughts with thoughts. The path of knowing the ground is Mahamudra, because what is to be abandoned is not truly established, so it cannot be abandoned by the antidote; because what is to be transformed is not truly established, so it cannot be transformed. The nature of mind is primordially abiding in emptiness, this is the Dharmakaya. It does not conceptualize any knowable object or knowable dharma, this is the Dharmakaya. While not conceptualizing, it is adorned with supreme bliss, this is the Sambhogakaya. It appears clear and unceasingly, manifesting infinitely in the forms of the three vajras (bodies), this is the Nirmanakaya, which is the Buddha-nature that has been present from the beginning. By recognizing this and becoming familiar with it, the connection between the ignorance of not recognizing one's own nature and confusion is severed, thereby attaining Buddhahood. The meaning of what was said is: The ground is the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara. In the vehicle of cause, the continuum of the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara is the non-veridical conceptualization of the two obscurations, which is true in the conventional sense that it performs the activities of samsara. By abandoning it through the accumulation of the two accumulations, one attains Buddhahood as body and wisdom. In the vehicle of result, the way to abandon the obscurations of such a ground, which is the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara, is that all the causes and effects of samsaric phenomena, even in name, are not truly established as cause and effect. Therefore, through the skillful means of interdependent origination like illusion, one transforms what is to be abandoned into what is to be adopted. By abandoning samsaric phenomena in the manner of what is to be abandoned returning to its own purity, one attains Buddhahood by realizing the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara as body and wisdom. Washing away impurities with impurities is to use impurity itself as the method for removing impurity, and to use the delusion of conceptual thought itself as the means for removing delusion, thereby transforming delusion into wisdom.
