The Chapter on Defeat. The Chapter on Defeat. In the mere Defeats, the general summary is: Knowing and seeds, not appointed and again and again, water and houses and thoughts, many guests, thieves, and teaching the Dharma. The first ten of these are summarized as: Lying, faults, monks, divisive speech, causing aversion, digging, revealing, abandoning, taking up bad places and Dharma, favoring friends, and especially killing. Thus it is. The true scriptural authority is: "Possessing life," and so on. The characteristic of consciousness (33b) is: "Knowingly," and so on. The subject matter together with the combination is: "Falsely," and so on. That is to say, a monk with vows who has committed a defeat speaks a lie, and knowingly teaches what is not Dharma as Dharma and what is Dharma as not Dharma, which is a gross lie, and at the time of the Uposatha, when asked three times, "Are you all pure in this?" if one remains silent and passes by, such a lie becomes an offense of wrong-doing, and other lies besides those mentioned below, such as the lies of accusation made by the Sangha with remaining offenses, are knowing lies. If the consciousness is not confused and the intention is to speak, and one speaks the combination oneself, and finally the listener understands the meaning of the sign, then one incurs a defeat. The precept is: One should not take oaths to the Three Jewels, etc. 2. The basis for speaking of faults is: "Of a person," it says. The combination is: "If one speaks," and so on. That is to say, a monk as the basis speaks to another monk as the object, with a consciousness that is not confused and with the intention of speaking of faults. The combination is that the fault is known at that time and place. Whether one speaks with gentle or harsh words, if the other person understands the meaning, even if that monk does not become displeased, one incurs a defeat. If one speaks with the altruistic intention of wanting to reveal that fault, there is no defeat. 3. In divisive speech, the basis is: "A monk," it says, and the combination is: "Divisive speech," it says. That is to say, a monk as the basis, with the intention of dividing harmonious monks, speaks divisive words, starting with the name, and finally understands the meaning (34a), then one incurs a defeat. 4. In causing aversion, the basis is: "Again," it says, and the combination is: "Knowingly," it says. That is to say, as the cause of disputes, a monk who belongs to the pacification of disputes knowingly speaks to other monks as the object.

Regarding any of the four types of monastic disputes, if the Sangha has pacified them in terms of Dharma, without mistaken perception, and with the intention of wanting to stir up disputes, uttering words of regret such as "Your dispute has not been well pacified," ultimately, if the other party understands the meaning, it constitutes an offense. If one is not involved in the pacification and expresses regret for pacifying in a non-Dharmic way, it is a minor offense. Fifth, teaching Dharma to a laywoman: The basis and object are: Again, etc. The specific action is: Teaching, etc. The basis is a Bhikshu, the object is a laywoman who is not a relative, who can be relied upon physically, who can speak and understand. She is not one with miraculous powers or inherent wisdom, without mistaken perception, and with the intention of wanting to teach Dharma. The action is teaching five or six or more words of Dharma, excluding the Buddha's words, in the same place without a Vinaya companion. Ultimately, if the other party understands the meaning, it constitutes an offense. There is no offense in a wise woman asking about the Dharma, giving timely precepts, or explaining merits. Sixth, recitation: The basis and object are: Again, etc. The action is: Reciting, etc. The basis is a Bhikshu, the object of recitation is the Buddha's words and their commentaries, reciting together with one who has not taken full ordination, or at the beginning or end, unless unwilling and unable to avoid it. Ultimately, if the other party understands the meaning through the recitation, it constitutes an offense. Seventh, speaking of misdeeds: The basis and object are: Again, etc. The specific action is: Speaking, etc. The basis is a Bhikshu who has not been appointed to speak of misdeeds, in order to prevent non-believing laypeople. The object of speech is a Bhikshu who has genitals and does not understand, who has misdeeds up to the point where the Bhikshuni vows can be restored. The action is speaking of misdeeds with any Parajika or Sanghavasesa offense. Ultimately, if the other party understands the meaning, it constitutes an offense. Eighth, truthfully speaking of superior human qualities: The basis and object are: Again, etc. The content and action are: Human qualities, etc. The basis is a Bhikshu, the object is one who has not taken ordination and has not seen the truth, regarding the qualities arising from meditation that one has obtained oneself, without mistaken perception, and with the intention of wanting to speak of it.
