The Chapter on Expiation Requiring Forfeiture The Chapter on Expiation Requiring Forfeiture In the order of gradual exposition, the chapter on expiation requiring forfeiture is for the purpose of abandoning false imputation and slander. (First set of ten) (Summary: Holding, separating, placing, causing defilement, receiving, begging, and upper and lower garments, each assigned a value. Thus it is said. The teaching is: Venerable, and so on. The time limit for allowing the holding of supports is: Again, and so on. Time (25a) The transgression of exceeding the time limit is: If it exceeds that, and so on. That needs to be explained, suitable clothes, with measurements, belonging to oneself. Again, and so on. A monk who has not consecrated or has been defiled, who has not laid out a firm mat, whose consciousness is not confused, and whose motivation is to hold for his own sake, holds for ten days by his own power or by the power of defilement. Ultimately, after ten days have passed, when the first light of the eleventh day dawns, the expiation requiring forfeiture of holding arises. This transgression does not arise for those who sincerely dedicate to others, who consecrate as surplus and necessary items, and who lay out a firm mat. The way of defilement by association is that by consecrating, relying on consecration, for example, a seven-day medicine like molasses is consecrated on the first day. On the second day, another similar one is consecrated and held. If the former has passed seven days, even if the latter has not reached seven days, it acts as a substitute for reaching seven days, and relying on both, a transgression arises. The defilement of associating the unconsecrated with the unconsecrated is that when holding, one obtains clothes or a bowl on the first day, and another on the eighth day or so. If both the former and the latter are held without consecration, and the former has passed ten days, even if the latter has not reached ten days, it acts as a substitute for reaching ten days, and a transgression arises for both. This transgression does not apply to medicine, because the latter (25b) before it exists, the former has already incurred the transgression. This distinction is the defilement of time, not the defilement of not consecrating. If one obtains two medicines or clothes or bowls on the first day, one consecrated and one not consecrated, and holds them beyond their respective time limits, the unconsecrated one defiles the consecrated one, and two transgressions arise. This distinction is unconsecrated.

It is a trace of the ground, not a trace of overnight. Also, if you get a piece of clothing or a bowl on the first day, don't bless it. If you get the latter one on the first day, after blessing it, if the former one has passed ten days, after blessing the latter one, even if it has not passed ten days, it is considered as passed, because the trace is attached to the clothing, and this is established in this way, just like it is neither blessed nor has the trace of overnight. This is not the case with medicine, because giving and receiving have already been done before, and the transgression has already been committed. If any of the thirty relinquishment transgressions are committed, before confessing, if you get a suitable piece of clothing, etc., if you use the previous trace to decorate the latter piece of clothing, you must relinquish it. The first three establishments are the traces of transgression, and the latter one is just the trace of relinquishment. Second, separation is: the basis and combination is: Bhikshu. Thus it is said. The action, especially the combination is: of the boundary. Thus and so on. That is to say, any of the three Dharma robes of one's own, the Dharma, qualified, blessed ones, except for the necessary situations such as destruction, for the person who relies on, the hard spread, the soft spread, the bedding and the Sanghati, and without (26a) Having obtained the permission not to separate, therefore there is no confused thought, and having the intention of wanting to separate, therefore the action is, outside the place where the Dharma robe is placed and its surroundings, spending the night, and finally when the first ray of dawn rises on the morning of the next day, the relinquishment transgression of separation. For Dharma robes that are smaller than the standard, and those that are not Dharma, and those that are separated from the blessed objects, a minor offense is committed. The precepts are: do not place the mat today without intending to take it back. If you think so, but cannot return, borrow from others, and if you cannot borrow it. Place the upper garment folded in four layers so that it does not get damaged for a long time. The Sanghati is, there is no danger of losing it in the place where it is placed, and if there is danger in the way of carrying it, it should be placed there. If it is the opposite, carry it. The hard spread, the soft spread, the bedding, and having obtained the permission not to separate, there is no fault even if you do not carry it. If you intend to return on the same day, but cannot return, take out its blessing and bless it to anything including the clothes of the householder. If there is no place to bless, bless it yourself. Third, placing for a month. It is shown that the basis can be accepted is: Bhikshu. Thus and so on. After accepting, the transgression of exceeding the time
