Therefore, because it arises, the light of wisdom is not known. Root verse: In the world, some are light, some are darkness. Some are nectar, some are water and fire. All completely contradictory concepts, habits follow, nothing is certain. This means that in this place of existence, the only ones who can separately perceive the four elements are humans, while for other beings, the sun, which is light for some, is also perceived as darkness by fireflies and others. Some are nectar, and for the single water, gods perceive it as nectar, hell beings perceive it as fire, and hungry ghosts perceive it as pus and blood, etc. All these contradictory concepts, appearing inverted, also follow their respective habits, and nothing is certain. Combined with this story, the son of the gods, Lotus Play, in the sutra, repeatedly asked and answered Manjushri: These external realms are not made by a maker, but are the appearance of habits of not realizing the mind. And so on, many things were said like this. Root verse: Even so, the appearing object is not the mind. The image of the face enters the mirror, but it is only a cause of interdependence, the face and the mirror never mix. This means that even though the fault of deep-seated habits is great, the six objects that the mind enters are not the mind, for example, one's own face image enters the mirror, but it is only a cause of interdependence, the face image and the mirror never mix, at that time, no matter what others do to oneself, such as beating or using, the image in the mirror will not feel any pleasure or pain. Root verse: Although it does not exist, it appears, and to cling to it is a mistaken mind. When seeing a flowery rope, one clings to it as a snake. The first consciousness is the object of grasping, and afterwards, engaging in discrimination is the grasper. Know that all phenomena are like that. This means that the characteristic of appearance is that although it does not exist, it appears, just like in a dream, but clinging to it there is under the influence of a mistaken mind, for example, when the eyes see a flowery rope, they mistakenly think it is a snake, and the consciousness clings to it, or the first conceptual thought is the object of grasping, and afterwards, one discriminates and thinks about the previous conceptual thought, and then grasps again.

If it is held that what is apprehended is the speckled rope itself appearing as a snake, and that the apprehender is one's own consciousness, then there is no difference from a foolish cowherd. Root text: If the apprehended, appearing as a snake, Is said to be the consciousness of the owner, Then the person who does not distinguish between appearance and the place of appearance, Will also exist or not exist together with the appearance itself. That is, if it is said that the apprehender of what appears as a snake on the rope is the consciousness of the owner, then for a person who does not distinguish between the appearance of a snake in the mind and the place of appearance, it is also necessary to exist or not exist together with the appearance itself. Appearance means that all aspects of the six aggregates appear to the mind of sentient beings, but not to inanimate objects without mind. The six objects are the place of appearance, not the appearance. Root text: In whatever place, ignorance, grasping, and sudden causes, The lord of existence, between I and mine, Though non-existent, if the root of delusion is severed, The all-creating king, self-born, dissolves into itself. That is, wherever, for whomever, the power of primordial ignorance arises as grasping, clinging to self where there is no self in the nature of mind, and clinging to other where there is no other in appearance, if the root of delusion is severed—the lord of existence, between I and mine, that is, clinging to 'I' as 'I'—then the all-creating king of mind, self-born, dissolves into itself, like clouds dissolving into the sky. The eleventh chapter from The Key to Unlocking the Door to the Treasury of Precious Qualities, A Concise Commentary, A Drop from the Ocean, A Precious Key. Chapter Eleven: Showing the Great Perfection of Naturalness.
